Deckled edges. Decorated by colophon of Pear Tree Press. A short lived literary journal, which was issued only for 1903 and 1905, its main contents being poems and short stories. Authors represented include John Masefield, G.K. Chesterton, Thomas Hardy,Havelock Ellis, Laurence Binyon, E. F. Benson, Havelock Ellis, and the two editors, Laurence Housman and W. Somerset Maugham, represented here by his first published play. The illustrations, both specially commissioned and reproduced from elsewhere, include those by Lucien Pissaro and by Housman, himself. Decorative endpapers. 249pp., illustrated with 14 b/w wood-cuts and a 2 colour wood-cut as frontispiece (by artists including Charles S. Ricketts, Lucien Pissaro and E. Gordon Craig). "W. Somerset Maugham 23 October: 1960" in blue biro to title page. No other ownership markings or inscriptions. Some tanning to endpapers. Occasional light foxing. A few small splits to endpapers at front and inner hinges but binding still strong. Covers rather worn with chips to paper-bound edges of boards, edgewear and light soiling. To the reverse of the frontispiece is the pencilled signature and date of Autumn, 1903 by the illustrator, etcher, and marine artist, Norman Wilkinson. Some of the authors included in this important anthology are John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, A. E. Housman, Thomas Hardy, Laurence Housman, and W. Somerset Maugham. Illustrators include Charles S. Ricketts, Lucien Pissarro, E. Gordon Craig, Paul Woodroffe, Laurence Housman, and Bernard Sleigh. The front and rear covers are nearly detached, chipping to the lower spine end. Wear about all edges. With 38 plates some of which coloured incl. 2 etchings and illust. endpapers. Uncut. Extremely rare as the contributions include the first printing of two poems by Joyce 1: What Counsel Has The Hooded Moon; and 2: Thou Leanest To The Shell of Night. These poems subsequently appeared in Joyce's first printed book entitled 'Chamber Music' see Slocum & Cahoon B2 published two years later. NOTE: The list of contributors to this annual is an imposing one gathering in its net the names among others of Chesterton Hardy Housman Francis Thompson Maugham and of course Joyce on the literary side with Shannon Ricketts Pissarro and Rackham among the illustrators.
