Darwin, Charles. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. John Murray, London, 1890.

Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The Expression of Emotion is still considered to be definitive as a scientific study of emotional expression in man and animals. "'With this book Darwin founded the study of ethology (animal behaviour) and conveyance of information (communication theory) and made a major contribution to psychology' (DSB). the work contains studies of facial and other types of expression (sound, erection of hair, etc. ) in man and mammals, and their correlation with various emotions such as grief, love, anger, fear and shame. The results of Darwin's investigations showed that in many cases expression is not learned but innate, and enabled Darwin to formulate three principles-relief of sensation or desire, antithesis, and reflex action-governing the expression of emotions" (Norman 600). A second edition appeared in 1890, and, in his preface to it, Francis Darwin writes that his father had accumulated notes on the subject which he had been unable to use because the first edition was not exhausted in his lifetime. He incorporates these notes as well as adding his own footnotes in brackets. This represents the final text, and the printings of 1901 and 1905, though reset, are not altered. This copy belonged to G. Hilton Scribner who was the Secretary of State of New York from 1872-1873 and was a cousin of the publisher Charles Scribner. His book plate resides on the front paste down. Book is overall in very good condition. It is half leather with 5 raised bands, marbled boards and matching end papers, gilt title and gilt date of 1890 at bottom of back strip. The text block is tight and complete. A bit of loss of material along the front gutter. Silk ribbon page holder.

Charles Darwin. The Various Contrivances by Which Orchids Are Fertilised by Insects. John Murray, London, 1890.

Price: US$278.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: From Wikipedia: "Fertilisation of Orchids is a book by English naturalist Charles Darwin published on 15 May 1862 under the full explanatory title On the Various Contrivances by Which British and Foreign Orchids Are Fertilised by Insects, and On the Good Effects of Intercrossing. Darwin's previous book, On the Origin of Species, had briefly mentioned evolutionary interactions between insects and the plants they fertilised, and this new idea was explored in detail. Field studies and practical scientific investigations that were initially a recreation for Darwin-a relief from the drudgery of writing-developed into enjoyable and challenging experiments. Aided in his work by his family, friends, and a wide circle of correspondents across Britain and worldwide, Darwin tapped into the contemporary vogue for growing exotic orchids. The book was his first detailed demonstration of the power of natural selection and explained how complex ecological relationships resulted in the coevolution of orchids and insects. The view has been expressed that the book led directly or indirectly to all modern work on coevolution and the evolution of extreme specialisation. It influenced botanists, and revived interest in the neglected idea that insects played a part in pollinating flowers. It opened up the new study areas of pollination research and reproductive ecology, directly related to Darwin's ideas on evolution, and supported his view that natural selection led to a variety of forms through the important benefits achieved by cross-fertilisation. Although the general public showed less interest and sales of the book were low, it established Darwin as a leading botanist. Orchids was the first in a series of books on his innovative investigations into plants." This copy of the second edition is very good + in the publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles on the spine and blind-stamped borders on both covers. Very slight scuffing at the corners and very slight fraying at the spine ends. Three small bubbles in the cloth on the front cover. The front hinge is just the beginning of cracking of the endpaper, but no other marks or damage at all. Except for the front hinge, it would be near fine. . (Freeman 810).
