Condition: Fine

Description: Octavo, [6], 293pp. Patterned boards, title stamped in gilt on red cloth spine. Top edge gilt. Stated "First Printing" on copyright page. Solid text block, a touch of toning along hinges, a fine example. A few tears to acetate jacket with some loss. Limited edition of 250 copies, this being number 120. Signed by William Faulkner on the limitation page. William Faulkner (1897-1962) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recognized for A Fable in 1955 and The Reivers in 1963. The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, and Light in August were recognized by The Modern Library on their 1998 list of 100 Best English-language Novels of the 20th Century. Faulkner primarily set his stories in the American South, many of which took place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County. The Unvanquished contains seven short stories originally published individually in The Saturday Evening Post and Scribner's, with the exception of "An Odor of Verbena" which was saved for the release of this work. Chronologically, The Unvanquished takes place before the events of the novel Sartoris, despite the latter's original release year of 1929. Both novels are set in Yoknapatawpha County.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Octavo, original half burgundy cloth and patterned paper boards, top edge gilt. Number 164 of two hundred fifty signed copies. Complete with author's signature on the limitation page. A Near Fine copy of the book with the spine a bit faded and a previous owner's stamp on the half-title, otherwise a very pleasing copy. Lacking the publisher's acetate jacket, but with a new mylar. Personal responsibility and the fall of Old Southern gentility take center stage in Faulkner's The Unvanquished. Set in Mississippi and spanning the Civil War and Reconstruction, the story follows the Sartoris family and their attempt to maintain a sense of identity as the nation changes. "Having chosen warfare as the exciting backdrop for The Unvanquished, Faulkner writes of it well. By the time of the fall of Vicksburg, when the novel begins, the Confederate defeats at Shiloh and Corinth had opened northern Mississippi to the Federal armies.the border region of north Mississippi was overrun by both the Union and Confederate armies but controlled by neither" (Brown). In this chaos, the protagonist Bayard Sartoris grows from naïve boy to a young man with a greater understanding of the violent tensions that class and race can cause, both for individuals and their communities. Near Fine.

The notice gives publisher, price and date of publication (February 15, 1938) as well as a description of the book. Ò.Straight reading from Faulkner - in one of the finest books he has yet written. It covers the later days of the Civil War, when the Yankees destroyed the plantation but not the spirit of the indomitable Sartoris family in Mississippi. Many of the chapters appeared originally in magazines, but Faulkner has largely rewritten them, and this record of the valiant Sartorises is now a continuous narrative, packed with war, romance, humor, and above all, courage. Illustrations by Edward Shenton.Ó The photograph of Faulkner is one of the classic 1930s images of the man and in the white margin beneath reads: ÒWILLIAM FAULKNER - One of AmericaÕs top ranking authors, whose new book, THE UNVANQUISHED, deals with the Civil War (Random House).Ó The book is a fine tight copy in a lightly used dust jacket with a two inch tear, a faint bit of dust soiling at spine, and a couple of tiny nicks.
