Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: 16mo (4 1/4" x 6 1/2"), red cloth, gilt title on top cover and spine, illustrated with maps, 516 pp. Binding a little faded, very slight extremity wear, rear map of U.S. detached, back hinge a little weak, some aging and a little browning, rear endpaper browned and brittle, normal aging overall; otherwise about very good. Karl Baedeker (1801-1959) was born in Essen, and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business, and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers, by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. This information was often edited by Baedeker himself, and sons would take over and expand the business after his death. This edition provides considerable information and many maps and plans of parts of the United States. Includes maps of the New York City, San Francisco, Northern Florida, Southern California, the Catskill Mountains, and Boston, and general map of the United States. ODB. $200

BAEDEKER, Karl (1801-1859) - MUIRHEAD, Dr. J.F. The United States with an Excursion into Mexico.. Leipsic: Karl Baedeker, 1893, 1893.

Price: US$480.00 + shipping

Description: 8vo., (6 2/8 x 4 1/8 inches). Half-title. Large folding chromolithographed map of the United States at end (a bit browned at folds), 16 other maps 22 plans, including many double-page or folding, as per the contents (one or two creases, some marginal toning, but BRIGHT AND ATTRACTIVE). Original red cloth, gilt (spine faded, extremities just a little worn, one or two pale stains). First edition in English, published simultaneously in German. An extensive guide-book with maps and plans of all major cities, and tourist destinations such as Yellowstone National Park, the Battlefield of Gettysburg, the Grand Canyon, the Yosemite, and including Mexico. Including a brief history of the U.S. and since the country is so large a range of suggested tours: "The plan of tour must depend entirely on the traveller's taste and the time he has at his disposal. It is manifestly impossible to cover more than a limited section of so vast a territory in an ordinary travelling season; but the enormous distances are practically much diminished by the comfortable arrangements for travelling at night. Among the grandest natural features of the country, one or other of which should certainly be visited if in any wise practicable, are Niagara Falls, the Yellowstone Park, the Yosemite Valley, Alaska, and the Grand Can[y]on of the Colorado" (page xxiii). As always much of the advice dispensed to the hapless traveller is timeless: Custom House: "The custom-house and examination of the luggage of travellers entering the United States is generally conducted courteously but often with considerable minuteness. Nothing is admitted free of duty except the personal effects of the traveller, and unusually liberal supplies of unworn clothing are apt to be regarded with considerable suspicion" (page xviii). 1893 was a good year for foreigners to travel to America as it was the year of a significant 'panic', which was the start of the greatest depression America had known, only surpassed by the Great Depression of the 1930s. In early May 1893 the New York stock market had dropped sharply, and in late June panic selling caused the stock market to crash. As a result more than 16,000 businesses had failed by the end of 1893, including 156 railroads and nearly 500 banks. The depression lasted for about four years, with the economy showing signs of improvement in 1897. Hinrichsen E259. Catalogued by Kate Hunter

Baedeker, Karl (edited by); written by J. F. Muirhead. The United States with an Excursion into Mexico: Handbook for Travellers. Karl Baedeker, Publishers, 1893.

Price: US$937.50 + shipping

Description: xc, 516 pages. The first Baedeker guide to the United States and the first to be written in English. Hinrichsen E259. First edition (first printing). An exceptional copy, seemingly never opened for reading. Collated complete will all maps, with most, including the large map of the Unites States, never unfolded. There is a very slight bit of fraying to the cloth in three or four places. The spine is slightly dimmed. There is a small previous owner's name on the front free endaper. To top it off, this copy is in the original unprinted dust jacket with the title label affixed to the spine, as was Baedeker's custom in the 1890s. The jacket has some chips and wear at the corners and spine ends, and several folds (it may have been folded and inserted in the book, which is why it survives). A great copy, almost never found this nice, let alone in the jacket. [JSP01; JHG2019].
