The personal account of Father Brebeuf, Franco- Jesuit Missionary, of his time living among the Hurons. Brebeuf first arrived in Canada with Samuel de Champlain in 1625. He returned in 1633, living and working there for the remainder of his life. His missionary work with the Hurons was considered successful due to his study of their culture and language, easily adapting to the local way of life. He and several other members of the community were captured by the Iroquois in 1649, undergoing lengthy torture before death.

Description: folio. pp. 196, [2 leaves]. maps on endleaves. title lettering & 2 wood-engraved title illus. by Eric Gill. Uncut in original cloth (bit of fraying to spine ends). Limited to 300 numbered copies, this being #86. Brébeuf came to Canada with Samuel de Champlain in 1625, and founded the Huron missions near Georgian Bay, where he spent the years 1626-29, 1633-40, and 1644-49. On March 16, 1649, he was martyred at the village of St. Ignace during the Iroquois raids which destroyed the missions. He wrote two of the Jesuit Relations from the Huron missions, which are here translated by Besterman together with other writings. Brébeuf was canonized with other Jesuit martyrs in 1930. Gill 297.
