Description: Saki (pseudonym of H. H. Munro). The Toys of Peace and Other Papers by H. H. Munro ("Saki") With a Portrait and a Memoir. London: John Lane The Bodley Head; New York: John Lane Company, 1919. First edition. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [ix] x-xxiv [1-2] 3-303 [304: blank]. Original mauve decorative cloth, front panel stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. Illustrated with a photographic portrait of the author at the frontis. Spine gilt faded, last leaf and rear free endpaper creased vertically, evidence of removal of a sticker from front cover, a fairly good copy nonetheless, firm and clean inside. #1467. $15. The second-to-last collection of stories published by Saki, who died in combat in 1916. At least two of the stories are supernatural: "The Wolves of Cernogratz" and "The Hedgehog". The 15-page memoir by Rothay Reynolds looks at Saki from the point of view of a fellow soldier. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1433.

Price: US$64.16 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 303pp. Mauve cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with blind-stamped lettering and ornate rule to the upper board. With a camera portrait frontispiece of the author by E.O.Hoppé. A sixteen-page memoir of the author (killed by a German sniper in November 1916 during the battle of the Ancre) by Rothay Reynolds precedes thirty-three short stories. Cloth a little rubbed at the extremities, the backstrip lightly tanned and the spine lettering just a little dulled. A touch of spotting to the preliminary leaves and a tiny area of scuffing to the front endpaper where a pencilled price has been erased, alongside the faint trace of an almost entirely erased former owner name. Quite a good, if slightly dusty copy, lacking the uncommon dust wrapper.
