GREENE, GRAHAM.. THE THIRD MAN AND THE FALLEN IDOL.. William Heinemann Ltd., [1950]., London, 1950.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Fine in dust jacket with light wear to spine ends and the extremities. Rollo Martins comes to Vienna, a city still controlled by the four occupying powers, expecting a job from his old friend Harry Lime, only to arrive in time for his funeral. Angered by hints of his friend's involvement in the black market rackets and confused about conflicting reports of the hit-and-run accident that killed Lime, Martins decides to conduct his own investigation. The 1949 film, THE THIRD MAN was directed by Carol Reed, with Graham Greene as the screenwriter. The film starred Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, and Alida Valli. The Third Man Theme music was by Anton Karas. THE FALLEN IDOL was also made into a film in 1948, with Carol Reed as director and Graham Greene, Leslie Storm, and William Templeton as screen writers. It was originally published in 1935 using the title of THE BASEMENT ROOM. The title was chosen by the film distributors and is the story of a murder by a somewhat pathetic man who is unwittingly betrayed to the police by a small boy.

Greene, Graham.. The Third Man and The Fallen Idol.. London, William Heinemann, Ltd., [1950]., 1950.

Price: US$1657.34 + shipping

Description: 8vo. (6), 188 pp. Contemporary full cloth with silver stamped spine-title. With original photographic dust jacket with stills from both film adaptations. First English edition. In the preface Greene states that "'The Third Man' was never written to be read but only to be seen." Indeed, the novella was written as something of a screen treatment, a precursor to the screenplay he would ultimately write for the film adaptation, and not published until after the movie premiered. The 1949 film was directed by Carol Reed and starred Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard. Garnering three Academy Award nominations and winning for Best Cinematography, the film is considered "a bona fide classic" (Maltin) and was voted the greatest British film of all time in the British Film Institute's 1999 survey. - Greene writes in his second preface, "'The Fallen Idol' unlike 'The Third Man' was not written for the films. That is only one of the many reasons why I prefer it. It was published as 'The Basement Room' in 1935". This short story serves as the source material for the 1948 British film "The Fallen Idol", another critical success and again directed by Reed, starring Ralph Richardson. - Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; text block edges lightly toned with minor scattered foxing. Dust jacket unclipped, minor edgewear, chipping to head and foot of spine and corners with minimal losses, spine somewhat sunned. A good copy. - Miller 26c.

Greene, Graham. The Third Man and the Fallen Idol. Heinemann, London, 1950.

Price: US$2190.05 + shipping

Description: (London: William Heinemann 1950). First UK Edition. Publisher's original black boards with silver lettering to the spine and Heinemann logo blind-stamped to the rear board. The boards are really bright and clean with sharp corners and the spine lettering un-faded. The book appears to be unread. The top and fore edges have a touch of foxing which has just crept into the text block to the early/late pages of the book. Overall a close to fine copy with the inner pages beautifully clean and fresh. There are no inscriptions or book-plates. The dustwrapper is priced 6s net to the inside flap (as called for) and is a lovely near fine example with just a trace of rubbing to the tip and tail of the spine (which is completely un-faded). There is a miniscule nick at the head of the spine. The dustwrapper of this title is notoriously fragile and subject to wear. This copy has lasted the test of time remarkably well. Photographs/scans available upon request.
