Buddy and his closest friend, his eccentric, elderly cousin, Miss Sook - the memorable characters from Capote's A Christmas Memory - love preparing their old country house for Thanksgiving. But there's trouble in the air. Odd Henderson, a scrawny, freckled, red-headed bully makes Buddy the target of his relentless torment. But Miss Sook only counsels patience and understanding, "He can't help acting ugly; he doesn't know any different," she says. Filled with emotions that are universal to both young readers and adults, this poignant story brings to life what we all should cherish and be thankful for - the gifts of friendship and love. a perfect companion for the holiday bookshelf." - from Publishers Weekly

Description: 63pp. Original beige boards with red cloth spine. in the original publisher's box with a photographic label. Box has slightly bumped corners. Presentation copyInscribed by Truman Capote "With my admiration and gratitude - Truman Capote" Personally signed copies of this book are notoriously difficult to locate. The limited edition of 300 copies turns up more often. With the limited edition, Capote likely signed a stack of numbered sheets and never held the original book in his hands like he did with this copy. The story takes the form of a childhood tale about a boy and his bully problem. The story has a strong moral lesson related to revenge. It is a sequel to the author's "A Christmas Memory." The story is narrated by nine-year-old Buddy, whose older cousin is his best friend. Buddy gets stopped on the way to school every day by local bully Odd Henderson, who pins him to the ground and rubs burrs into Buddy's head because "he's a sissy", an appellation to which Buddy admits. To stop this problem, his cousin, Miss Sook, invites Odd to her big Thanksgiving party. During the party, when Buddy is sulking in his bathroom cupboard, he spots Odd stealing a precious cameo. When Odd leaves the bathroom, Buddy leaves and claims in front of the whole party that Odd has stolen the cameo. Miss Sook goes to check, and she claims that the cameo is in place, but then Odd admits to stealing the cameo, lays it on a table, and walks out. Buddy then runs out and sulks in the barn, until the afternoon, when Miss Sook teaches him that he shouldn't have publicly humiliated Odd.
