Malamud, Bernard. THE TENANTS. Farrar Straus and Giroux, New York, 1971.

Price: US$15.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: The sixth of the highly-respected Malamud's eight novels contains nearly all of the tensions and terrors of city social relationships in its 230 pages. Two writers, one black, one white, both living in the same abandoned tenement the landlord wants to demolish in order to construct the apartment building of his dreams. Racial hatred is complicated and enflamed by the presence of the black writer's white girl friend, a Jewish off-Broadway actress in analysis. Malamud does not allow an easy ending to the conflict. First printing, first edition (as stated, with 1971 date). About 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, 230 pages in orange cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Top edge of text stained black. yellow pastedowns. Dustjacket's front panel shows black window frame against dark grey building with aging, ragged grey curtains behind the window glass. Malamud's name in yellow, title in organge. Back panel contains b & w photo of Malmud seated on a porch. Other than touch of soiling to text edges, text and boards are complete, clean and unmarked. Spine ends lighlty bumped, o/w no bumping, scratching or other edge or surface wear. Not remaindered, not ex-library. There are two identical first edition dustjackets on this book, neither price-clipped. The inner jacket shows a narrow line of age-tanning along upper, inside edge and small creases on the corners of the front flap. The outer jacket shows identical creases on the front flap, a long vertical crease on the back flap but almost none of the age-tanned edge. A collectable copy. Malamud, who was also known as a prolific short story writer, and probably best remembered for his 1952 baseball novel, "The Natural," easily holds his own with America's other great 20th century novelists such as Roth and Bellow.

From the inside cover flaps: "The sole tenant in a run-down tenement, Harry Lesser is struggling to finish a novel, but his solitary pursuit of the sublime grows complicated when Willie Spearmint, a black writer ambivalent toward Jews, moves into the building. Harry and Willie are artistic rivals and unwilling neighbors, and their uneasy peace is disturbed by the presence of Willie's white girlfriend, Irene, and the landlord Levenspiel's attempts to evict both men and demolish the building. This novel's conflict, current then, is perennial now: it reveals the slippery nature of the human condition, and the human capacity for violence and undoing.". #00025. very good: stated first printing, tight binding, pencil underlining throughout, black topstain good: price clipped, very minor chipping, creases on both inside flaps

Malamud, Bernard. The Tenants.. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 1971.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Malamud's sixth novel. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Susie and Paul With affection for dear friends- Bern." The recipients, Suzanne and Paul Shrag were close friends of Malamud and brother of printmaker Karl Schrag. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Malamud began the initial composition of the novel in 1969 and completed it in 1971. Its plot concerns a rivalry between two writersâ€"one of them a Jew and the other an African-Americanâ€" who are the last two persons remaining in a soon to be condemned apartment building. Before Malamud began writing this novel, he'd already "published two short stories treating relationships between blacks and Jews": "Angel Levine" (1955) and "Black Is My Favorite Color" (1963). And in at least one other story, "The Mourners" (1955), he had examined the fraught relationship between a tenant and a landlord. After he'd completed the novel, Malamud himself described The Tenants as a "tight, tense book, closer to the quality of short fiction."
