Condition: New

Description: 15 X 11 CM- " Beatrix Potter (illustrator). Reprint 1986.- "Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny are back in this adventure that also features two particularly "disagreeable" villains.Fortunately, those two villainsTommy Brock the badger and Mr. Tod the foxdislike each other so much that, when Tommy Brock kidnaps Benjamin's young family, Mr. Tod unwittingly becomes the rabbits' ally. Now, with all the original text in a fully illustrated Worthington Press edition, Beatrix Potter's animal stories have been a joy to generations of young readers. Her warm, playful illustrations in soft colors invite children into the world of words and flights of fancy. Once there, she gently and humorously guides readers along the path of righteousness, leaving just enough room for children to wonder if that incorrigible Peter will be back in McGregor's garden tomorrow. Helen Beatrix Potter (1866 - 1943) was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books featuring animals, her first and perhaps most famous being The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In all, Potter wrote thirty books; the best known being her twenty-three children's tales. Frederick Warne & Co was founded in 1865 by London bookseller and publisher, Frederick Warne. I Hardcover has white laminated covers with full color illustrations front & rear, black lettering on spine & front cover. No DJ.

Condition: Fine

Description: This fine copy is quarter bound in tan cloth to tan paper covered boards with brown titling and an inset colour plate to the upper board. A dust wrapper is not called for. The text block is unmarked, tight, white, bright and square. The Tale of Mr. Tod is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter, first published by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1912. The tale is about a badger called Tommy Brock and his arch enemy Mr. Tod, a fox. Brock kidnaps the children of Benjamin Bunny and his wife Flopsy, intending to eat them, and hides them in an oven in the home of Mr. Tod. Benjamin and his cousin Peter Rabbit have followed Tommy Brock in an attempt to rescue the babies. When Mr. Tod finds Brock asleep in his bed, he determines to get him out of the house. His initial attempt fails, and the two eventually come to blows. Under cover of the fight, the rabbits rescue the baby rabbits. The tale was influenced by the Uncle Remus stories, and was set in the fields of Potter's Castle Farm. Black and white illustrations outnumber those in colour. The tale is critically considered one of Potter's "most complex and successful in plot and tone. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Potter, Beatrix. THE TALE OF MR. TOD. , 1912.

Price: US$425.00 + shipping

Description: London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1912. Original light grey paper-covered boards with front cover color plate. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's eighteenth book, and the first title to appear in the "New Series" that was unfortunately issued in a binding almost as fragile as the earlier titles. Unlike Beatrix Potter's earlier books, the principal characters are villains! and in the opening paragraph we get a hint of this fact. When sending Warne some of the book drawings, Beatrix Potter referred to the one about the fight between [the fox] Mr. Tod and [the badger] Tommy Brock [on page 86] -- which she found difficult to draw: "You will see a very confused one of the combat. I could hardly shirk one picture of it; but it was difficult to work out in detail so I made it dark." [Linder] This copy is in light grey boards (buff was another option -- no precedence). It is in near-fine condition (spine slightly browned as always, a couple of small edge-chips in the front-cover plate). Linder pp 210-212 and p. 429.

POTTER, Beatrix.. The Tale of Mr. Tod.. London and New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1912, 1912.

Price: US$579.72 + shipping

Description: First edition, first or second impression, with the publication year on the title page; the first two impressions are identical. This story stands out in Potter's oeuvre as a longer, darker tale, in which the two protagonists - the badger and the fox - are both villains. The book opens with the narrator stating: "I have made many books about well-behaved people. Now, for a change, I am going to make a story about two disagreeable people". This opening "was one that [Potter] was particularly proud of, since it got away from the familiar setting of 'once upon a time'. It also highlighted her mood and her approach to this last book set at Sawrey. The forty-two pen and ink sketches in Mr. Tod are deliberately framed by heavy lines, making them resemble woodcuts. They give the violent story a primitive quality suited to the atmosphere of primal enmity" (Lear, pp. 245-6). Linder p. 429; Quinby 21. Linda Lear, Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature, 2007. Sextodecimo (137 x 102 mm). Recent green half morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration in compartments, original paper-covered boards, colour pictorial onlay on front cover, original pictorial front endpapers, new rear endpapers. With colour frontispiece and 14 similar plates, numerous black and white illustrations in text, all by the author. Occasional small marks and light fingersoiling to contents, else clean. Potter was also a pioneer of merchandising—in 1903, Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy, making him the oldest licensed character. The tale is critically considered one of Potter's "most complex and successful in plot and tone." Potter's publisher wanted Mr. Tod to be the first in a new series of Peter Rabbit tales in larger formats with elaborate bindings, but Potter disliked the idea. Nonetheless, Mr. Tod and its 1913 follower, The Tale of Pigling Bland, were published in the new formats, but the idea was eventually dropped and the ordinary bindings were adopted for reprints. The two tales were the last completely original productions by Potter. She continued to publish sporadically but used decades-old concepts and sketches rather than new images and ideas. A.M.H.' Annie Maria Armitt (1850-1933), one of three gifted and well-educated sisters, was a novelist, poet, short story writer, and essayist. Unusually for the time Mr Armitt wanted to give his talented daughters a first class education, but in 1867 this plan went awry when their father died suddenly leaving the trio facing severe financial difficulties. Undaunted however, together they opened a school in Eccles, Lancashire, which thrived, allowing them to travel and continue their own studies. In 1912 the youngest sister, Mary Louisa, founded The Armitt Library, now known as The Armitt, a museum, library and gallery, devoted to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of the Lake District. Beatrix Potter was one of the Armitt's earliest supporters, and the collection holds a number of her family's books, her own first edition copies of her books, and a large number of botanical watercolours by her. Annie Armitt married Stanford Harris in 1877 and went to live near Hawkshead in the Lake District. In 1882 Mary and Sophia received a substantial legacy and in 1894 they moved to Rydal, where they lived with Annie, now widowed, for the rest of their lives. Here the sisters enjoyed socialising with a large circle of distinguished friends, including John Ruskin as well as Beatrix Potter. 'Jemima Puddle-Duck is her poem about [Hill Top Farm] itself, and anyone who is curious to reconstruct its exact appearance in those days can do so from the pictures in that book ' (Margaret Lane). Another of the author's most famous creations, Jemima Puddle-Duck, with her naive & trusting nature, was based on a real duck from Hill Top Farm, and proved immensely popular, spin-off merchandise including a Jemima painting book and illustrated fabric placemats hand-fashioned by Potter and distributed to friends. Critically, the book is considered one of Potter's best. For the first edition of 1908 see Linder, p.427; Quinby 14.
