Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition of this tale of a village shop run by a cat and a dog, based upon a store local to Potter's own Hill Top farm. Potter originally composed this story as a Christmas present for Louie Warne, the daughter of her publisher. In it, she drew from her own experiences visiting the general store in Sawrey, which Margaret Lane notes was "the focus of village life, as much a centre for meeting and gossip." In the published version, Potter dedicated the book to the real shop's owner, John Taylor, who "thinks he might pass as a Dormouse" - and indeed, Mr. John Dormouse and his daughter appear at the end of the book. 7'' x 5.25''. Original tan paper boards stamped in green, pictorial paste-on. Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Potter with 10 full-page color plates and black-and-white in-text illustrations. 52 pages. Small bookseller ticket on front pastedown gutter. Faint spotting around margins of boards. Light marginal foxing to text.

POTTER, Beatrix (author and illustrator).. The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies.. , 1909.

Price: US$921.38 + shipping

Description: London, Frederick Warne And Co. 1909. 12mo.; publisher's brownish-grey boards lettered in white with onlaid triangular pictorial label to upper cover, pictorial endpapers; pp. [viii], 9-84 + [ii]; with coloured plates throughout after watercolours by Potter; externally near fine, bright, clean and sharp with only a very small (8mm), neat, split to lower joint at head of spine; internally fine, crisp, and exceptional, without inscription, marks, or signs of handling. First edition, either the first or second printing, which are bibliographically indistinguishable, with the noticeboard depicted in the illustration on page 14 which was removed in later editions due to problems with translation. After the phenomenal success of her two great classics "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" (1902) and "The Tale of Benjamin Bunny" (1904) Beatrix Potter moved away from rabbit protagonists to feature a wide range of animals in her little books. However her rabbit stories were among her most popular and she returned to the subject with this title which has references to both those earlier books. Benjamin Bunny and his cousin Flopsy are now parents to six young rabbits who are captured in a sack by the heartless Mr. McGregor. It requires the ingenuity of Thomasina Tittlemouse to set them free and triumph over the gardener with a clever trick.

Description: First edition, first printing, deluxe issue. Beatrix Potter showed an avid interest in the design of her books. When Warne issued The Tale of Peter Rabbit in paper boards and in cloth at a higher price, Potter complained that "there was not sufficient difference between the two styles of bindings" and that "If the cloth binding had been more distinctly different, and pretty, there might have been more inducement to buy it". For the sequel to Peter Rabbit, Potter designed this binding which sold at 1/6d over standard copies at 1/-. Quinby 16. Sextodecimo. Original green fine-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with pictorial label, pictorial endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom green cloth folding box.
