Beatrix Potter. The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Frederick Warne & Co, London, 1905.

Price: US$256.17 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: ‘The Tale Of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle’ ~ by Beatrix Potter, pub by Frederick Warne & Co, London 1905; 4 ¼” x 5 ¾” cream coloured boards; 64pp with 27 colour plates incl the frontis (checked and all intact); all pages are intact in the book but the binding is quite lose, mainly due to the binding having split from the rear endpaper, also the frontispiece page is very lose from the title page – the binding has split down but there are 4 strands of cotton still holding the binding together (book is a little delicate now from obviously plenty of use by ‘small hands’); a skilled book restorer could probably do a good job of tightening the binding and gluing the binding at the back of the book; there is a small tear ¼” on the top of the inside rear end paper; the pages all appear to be in good condition with a minimum of marks on them; the boards are in quite good condition, but do have a few marks on them; there are snags at the top & bottom of the spine and there are several splits on the joint of the back board to the spine. On the verso of the title page is printed ‘Copyright 1905 by Frederick Warne & Co’, so this is a very early edition published in the same year as the 1st edition. NB The actual 1st Edition is dated 1905 on the title page, and the boards should be in brown or green with 1/- (one shilling) printed on them. More photos available on request.

"Beatrix Potter, writer of some of the most beloved children's books of all time, was a woman of immense talent, indefatigable spirit, and a generous heart.Although she grew up in London, she was deeply influenced by long family holidays in the countryside, first in Scotland and later in the English lake district. As was the custom in families of her class, she was educated at home by governesses. An eager student of languages and literature, she grew up loving classic folk and fairy tales. Her talent for drawing and painting was discovered early and encouraged" (Beatrix Potter Society). Price: US$4483.02 + shipping

Description: Frederick Warne and Co. First edition, first impression, the blue variant binding with round pictorial inlay to upper board. In very scarce printed glassine wrapper that has ONE SHILLING NET near the foot of the front panel, with lists of Warne publications to both flaps plus 6 Peter Rabbit Books listed to rear cover, the last being "New Book for 1905. The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle." 10 coloured plates and line drawings to text. The first of Potter's works to be published in a large format and the details of her engaging watercolours are even more enjoyable on this scale. The colour plates are printed on one side of the quality paper; the other side is blank. There is a small crease to the top of page 7 and some sl. browning to both front and rear free endpapers. There is a scant portion of light foxing at the top of the centre fold. A light water stain covers a small triangle portion (4x2cm) to the front cover by the foot of the spine. This stain travels more lightly across the tail of the spine and bottom sixth of the back cover. There is the slightest corresponding rippling to the base of the rear panel of the glassine wrapper. There is a couple of small pieces of the wrapper missing to the tail of the spine and along the top edge of the rear panel there are a couple of pieces missing by the top of the rear flap alongside an open 3cm tear. Potter, Beatrix. The Tale Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Frederick Warne and Co, London, 1905.

Price: US$5463.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Potter's comforting tale of a young girl who finds both her pocket handkerchief and a friend in the maternal hedgehog, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Color illustrations throughout offer agrarian quaintness paired with pastoral adventure, a combination common to Potter's stories. Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit make cameo appearances, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is herself a sort of cameo, since Potter cared for a real-life hedgehog of the same name. The other main character, the girl Lucie, is derived from a happy meeting between Potter and a vicar's daughter while on vacation in Cumbria. Bound in brown paper over boards with titling embossed in silver and Potter's illustration of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle inset at center of upper cover. Slight splay to upper board, faint foxing at edges of text block, else near fine. In extremely scarce original glassine dust wrapper, somewhat chipped at corners and with few instances of mild staining. Laid in is a gift inscription from a previous owner.

Octavo, original boards with embossed titles and pictorial cover label, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with 26 color plates by the author. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author on the front pictorial endpaper in the year of publication, "For Theresa Thorp with love from Beatrix Potter Oct 15th 05." Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated thirty books throughout the course of her lifetime, the best-known being her charming twenty-three children's tales featuring animals, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit which she self-published in her thirties after multiple publisher's rejections. The book was was so well-received upon publication in 1902, that within just a few weeks she requested a second impression. Now firmly established as a popular writer and illustrator, Potter began writing full time and went on to produce such endearing stories as The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of Tom Kitten, and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, among others. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in 1905 and over the following decades, purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape of the Lake District of Lancashire.
