Potter, Beatrix. The Tailor of Gloucester (Potter 23 Tales). Warne, 1903.

Price: US$22.69 + shipping

Condition: New

Description: 15 X 11 CM- " Beatrix Potter (illustrator). Reprint 1986. Beatrix Potter's famous taleThe Tailor of Gloucester was first published in 1903 and tells the story of a poor tailor trying to survive in his freezing workshop over a hard winter. He has a terribly important commission to complete for the Mayor of Gloucester's wedding on Christmas Day but is ill and tired, and before long is running out of food and thread, as well as time! How will he possibly complete the beautiful coat and embroidered waistcoat? Luckily, there lives in the dresser, some very kind and very resourceful mice who set about helping the poor tailor with his work. Not only are they exceedingly helpful, but they are also, luckily, far far too clever for the tailor's sly cat, Simpkin. Beatrix Potter's animal stories have been a joy to generations of young readers. Her warm, playful illustrations in soft colors invite children into the world of words and flights of fancy. Once there, she gently and humorously guides readers along the path of righteousness, leaving just enough room for children to wonder if that incorrigible Peter will be back in McGregor's garden tomorrow. Helen Beatrix Potter (1866 - 1943) was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books featuring animals, her first and perhaps most famous being The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In all, Potter wrote thirty books; the best known being her twenty-three children's tales. Frederick Warne & Co was founded in 1865 by London bookseller and publisher, Frederick Warne. I Hardcover has white laminated covers with full color illustrations front & rear, black lettering on spine & front cover. No DJ.

POTTER, Beatrix (1866-1943). The Tale Of Squirrel Nutkin. New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1903, 1903.

Price: US$643.28 + shipping

Description: FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Sexto-Decimo (14 x 11cm), pp.86. Illustrated with 27 coloured plates. Publisher's blue paper-covered boards with illustration laid-down to upper. Endpapers conform to Quinby plate II, with the illustration of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle showing the soles of her shoes (employed 1904-6), the earliest address appearing on title page '36E 22nd St' (employed 1902-1910), the copyright date as 1903 (later changed to 1905) and the earliest imprint 'Schlueter' at rear. Light wear only; a near fine copy of a fragile item. Potter's second-published book for children (1903), following Peter Rabbit (1902). It charts a classic course of Hubris, followed by sudden and inevitable Nemesis, with a little twist at the end to avoid the necessity of describing the flaying and evisceration of the protagonist. Quinby notes three versions of the American editions but no copy with this particular combination of factors (the copyright date, endpaper design and imprint). Uncommon. Quinby 5.

Eleven of these are repeated from No. 3 (see notes on illustrations under No. 3), and 17 (the italicized figures above) are entirely new for this edition, though the original drawing for the manuscript in its first form has a rough sketch of the picture appearing in No. 4 on p. 53. (See Appendix I.) All of the illustrations in No. 4 are repeated in the recent New York edition, with certain loss of detail : In No. 4, p. 56, there is a shadow on the snowy street reaching from the lower right corner to the center of the picture, while in the recent New York edition this shadow is entirely lacking. In No. 4, p. 59, there is a dark sky and a dark moonlight shadow on the lower part of the houses in the center background which reaches out to the center of the snowy square so that the light from the window at left shows up strongly, while in the recent New York edition all sense of this being a night picture is lost.

Potter, Beatrix. THE TALE OF SQUIRREL NUTKIN. Frederick Warne and Co, London and New York, 1903.

Price: US$2200.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first or second issue, of the story of what happens when an over-confident squirrel tries the patience of an owl. Set in the scenic Lake District, where "the Potter family had spent a number of their summer holidays," THE TALE OF SQUIRREL NUTKIN is the classic Beatrix Potter mix of realistic and fantastic animal exploits (Taylor et al., 111). The sailing squirrels and the antics of Nutkin (and his eventual comeuppance) were an immediate hit with Potter's young readers, who wrote her letters about how much they enjoyed the "lovely" "Scell nuskin"; "I shall always have a strong preference for cheap books myself," Potter wrote to Norman Warne, "all my little friends happen to be shilling people" (Linder, 142). 5.5'' x 4''. Original dark grey paper boards with color pictorial center panel and white lettering. Color decorative endpapers of other Beatrix Potter characters. Illustrated in color throughout. 86 pages. Gift inscription to front flyleaf, dated 1904. Lacks scarce glazed paper dust jacket. Binding with a bit of bumping to spine ends and lower corners. Spine cracked to a couple of openings, leaves with scattered soil; two small abrasions to gutter of pages 84/85. Colors vibrant.

The jacket has a few very small chips along the top edge (the largest being a 3/8 inch piece missing at the top of the spine), but is certainly the finest jacket for this title that we have ever seen. "The year 1903 appears on the front of the title-page of the first two printings. The first printing [October 1903] has a single-page end-paper occurring four times, and the second printing [December 1903], a double-page end-paper occurring twice. In the art fabric de-luxe edition, some copies have the usual frontispiece, others have the cover picture in its place. Both pictures were printed on one sheet, which was cut in half, and each half used as a tipped-in frontispiece. With this binding there was no cover picture" (Linder, p. 423). Linder, p. 423.
