Duodecimo size (12mo), 7.75"/19.6cm h. Bound in publisher's black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. [vi] pp prelim material, 161 numbered pp, [162] colophon. Seven stories. Condition notes: this is an ex-library copy with the typical array of stamps and stickers indicating such; also includes library pocket and checkout card on rfep. Lacks dustjacket. Moderate wear/rubbing to boards. Spine slightly cocked, light toning to edges, corners bumped, spine ends rolled, loss of brightness to spine lettering. Relic tape images to center of both boards, head and tail - as to both free endpapers (but not pastedowns). Pages tanned but unmarked but for library standard markings. The copyright page contains this history of the stories: "Among the papers of the late Howard Phillips Lovecraft were various notes and/or outlines for stories which he did not live to write. Of these, the most complete was the title story of this collection. These scattered notes were put together by August Derleth, whose finished stories grown from Lovecraft's suggested plots, are offered here as a finelal collaboration, post-mortem." Description: First edition, first printing, limited to two thousand copies. A neat and tightly bound copy. Very slight bumping to spine tips and one corner. There are several faint spots on rear board and margin, still Near Fine. Contents remains clean and unmarked. The unclipped ($3.00) dust jacket has minor edge wear, heavy toning on the spine and margins. There is cello-taping at the fold lines on the inner side of the DJ, though there are no tears present. This is not noticeable from the right side of the DJ. The design is by Ronald Clyne.

This copy was purchased new, probably in 1958/9 in Syracuse, NY, and read once by me. Book store's small stamp on back pastdown. Book square (no bumping), tight, and fine. Original gold lettering on book spine. The DJ (unclipped, $3.00 price) has the common brownish toning to spine and near edges. No significant edgewear to DJ except for tiny 1/8" tear at bottom of back. A fine copy overall.

The dust jacket, not price clipped, is lightly soiled with age-toning along edges of front and rear panels and to the spine strip. Now enclosed in Brodart.

Description: Cover Art; This edition is limited to 2000 copies (actually 2096 copies). This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is one tiny bit of bumping to the top spine end of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean with some beginning toning to the rear panel. The stories included in this collection were completed by August Derleth using Lovecraft's notes or story outlines -- it's difficult therefore to determine exactly how much was conceived by H. P. Lovecraft, and how much by August Derleth (paraphrased from the Arkham House Companion). Short stories include: The Survivor, Wentworth's Day, The Peabody Heritage, The Gable Window, The Ancestor, The Shadow Out of Sapce, and, The Lamp of Alhazred.
