Condition: Near Fine

Description: 1944-53 printing, Toledano 170.1, binding/jacket style 8h, 306 titles on verso, 95 cent jacket price, grey Rockwell Kent endpapers. Near fine in very good jacket. Jacket edges a bit rubbed with small surface tear on rear panel (sticker removal?) and minimal loss from corners. 1930 Hard Cover. ix, 259 pp. Introduction by Henry Seidel Canby. The Sun Also Rises was Ernest Hemingway's first big novel, and immediately established Hemingway as one of the great prose stylists, and one of the preeminent writers of his time. It is also the book that encapsulates the angst of the post-World War I generation, known as the Lost Generation. This poignantly beautiful story of a group of American and English expatriates in Paris on an excursion to Pamplona represents a dramatic step forward for Hemingway's evolving style. Featuring Left Bank Paris in the 1920s and brutally realistic descriptions of bullfighting in Spain, the story is about the flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley and the hapless Jake Barnes. In an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions, this is the Lost Generation.

Hemingway, Ernest. A Farewell to Arms (Grosset & Dunlap Wrapper]. Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, New York, 1930.

Price: US$495.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Circa 1931 printing. Intriguing issue with a version of 1932 photoplay wrapper, Grosset at title page, but with Scribner printing details for seventh printing at copyright with the Scribner colophon. Rare issue in original wrapper with artistic rendition of Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper characters. Stated at copyright: "Copyright, 1929 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Published September, 1929; Reprinted twice in September, 1929; Reprinted October, 1929; Reprinted three times in November 1929." Measures apprx. 5 1/4" x 7 5/8" design. This edition appears to slightly precede the official 1932 Grosset photoplay edition which is common in the red cloth boards. Dark brown full cloth boards, navy semi-reflective cover and spine titles, light shelf wear, rub, discoloration. Deckled pages near fine; light toning at endpapers. Darkly colored upper text block, moderate toning. Antiquarian pictorial bookplate at front pastedown: "Ex Libris, 'W. A. Bowman.'" Plate features ornate border with scene of fireplace and reading loungers, books on shelf above. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Features jacket design matching the photoplay edition, moderate shelf wear, few chips, rub, flap corners slightly clipped; protected in new clear sleeve. Very attractive. Front flap features summary of this title without mention of the film. Back flap features summary of "Exile" by Warwick Deeping first published in 1930. Interestingly, Deeping's novel also features ex-patriates gathering in Italy whereas Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises," has similar in France and Spain. Back panel features pictorial vignettes and list of titles not found on other photoplay jackets and states: "Books for Everyone" from Grosset & Dunlap. Near fine early printing in good scarce wrapper. An attactive example of this Hemingway masterpiece, one of the great novels of the 20th century, set during the Italian Campaign of WW I. First published serially in Scribner's Magazine, the book was included in The Modern Library's 100 greatest novels of the 20th century. The story recounts the romance between Frederic Henry, an American soldier, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. Heavily autobiographical, the plot was directly inspired by Hemingway's relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky in Milan. Catherine's parturition (childbirth) was inspired by the intense labor pains of Pauline in the birth of Patrick - Ernest' second wife and second son - and the real-life Kitty Cannell inspired the fictional Helen Ferguson. The priest was based on Don Giuseppe Bianchi, the priest of the 69th and 70th regiments of the Brigata Ancona. At back following story are eight pages featuring various titles and lists available from Grosset & Dunlap. 355 pages and advert section. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Hemingway, Ernest. The Sun Also Rises (First ML ed. in 1st ML DJ). Modern Library, New York, 1930.

Price: US$875.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The Modern Library. New York. 1930. 259 pages. Modern Library # 170. First Modern Library Edition stated on the copyright page. First printing in original 1st issue Modern Library DJ with 170 books listed in the Modern Library Collection on rear of DJ. DJ price of 95 cents intact on DJ flap. DJ artwork is by Wuyts. Book is beautiful. Binding and hinges are strong. Flexi-cloth panels are clean with sharp corners. On February 25th, 1930, the Modern Library printed their First Edition of this title. The first ML edition was offered in a choice of 4 hues without preference to which of the 4 colors came first. Red, Blue, Green and Maroon. Cloth color would in turn dictate the corresponding illustrative endpaper color as well as the topstain color. In my experience, Maroon seems to be the least common color. Original first issue DJ shows rubbing/wrinkle along edges with shallow chipping. DJ shows professional reinforcement on interior. Front flap fold of DJ is cracked along crease but sits snug in place. An excellent copy of the 1st ML edition, 1st printing in original, corresponding 1st issue DJ with 170 books listed in the ML series up to that point. Not a coincidence that this is Modern Library # 170! VG+/G+

Price: US$945.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: VERY RARE FIRST MODERN LIBRARY EDITION WITH DUST JACKET The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. New York: The Modern Library, 1930 FIRST MODERN LIBRARY EDITION STATED. Here is a very attractive FIRST PRINTING of a rare Modern Library title in a great pictorial dust jacket. Bound in green balloon cloth (spine #5) with Kent end papers. Very short-lived binding style, in use 1929 - Spring 1930. This gold-heavy design was planned before the 1929 crash, and was quickly deemed too expensive for Depression-era book publishing. The gold torchbearer was replaced with a blindstamped torchbearer, and in 1930, the gold tree was dropped. The book is NEAR FINE. Solid binding, bright gilt on cover and spine, bright matching green topstain. Contents are clean with no owner's signature or other writing in text. GORGEOUS! The beautiful pictorial dust jacket is VERY GOOD - chipping on top and bottom spine with slight age toning and water spots. Otherwise clean and bright! 95 cent price present and bright on inside flap. The back of the dust jacket mentions 170 titles matching a 1930 printing and FIRST MODERN LIBRARY EDITION. Now protected in an archival-quality dust jacket protector.
