Dear Charles - at 'Robinson's' these men were autographing their book to purchasers so I got into the long line - Mr Hilton is a likable fellow with a cheery smile and Dr Wassell very approachable. I dared to ask him [Hilton] to burn a hole in the paper with his ever-in-hand cigarette - He said 'you want me to do that?' Then he said 'wait a minute' - So, he further wrote his name in Chinese :-)! His [Wassell's] photograph on the back cover is a perfect likeness - 'Mom'". There are two small cigarette holes just above the signatures. The note had been attached to the page with a rusty paper clip, and there is residue on the note, the page, the pastedown, and the front flap of the dust jacket. The dust jacket notes that "The author's royalties will be given to the Navy Relief Society."

Green cloth. 5" x 7 1/2". In 1942, U.S. Navy Dr. Wassell was assigned to care for the wounded from the cruisers Marblehead and Houston which had sought refuge in Java after heavy action. With the Japanese advancing, the ships were to depart. Dr. Wassell elected to stay with the 12 men who were badly wounded at a Dutch inland hospital. Dr. Wassell then miraculously sheparded the men to the seacoast and safety. He was awarded the Navy Cross. James Hilton ("Lost Horizon") wrote this book, which was the sourcework for the 1944 movie "The Story of Dr. Wassell" by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Gary Cooper as Dr. Wassell and Laraine Day as Madeline Wassell. PRESENTATION copy from the author to actor RONALD COLMAN (who starred in the film adaptations of two previous James Hilton novels: LOST HORIZON & RANDOM HARVEST). A Near Fine copy (spine slightly faded) in a Fine priced ($1.50) original dust jacket. The inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "For Ronny/ with all good wishes from James/April 1943." Hilton also has signed the book on the title page. Hilton and Colman were part of same close British Expatriate colony in Hollywood and were particularly good friends. The film adaptation in 1944, which tells the story of Dr. Wassell's quiet heroics in rescuing injured soldiers who had been left behind on Java during the WW2 War in the Pacific, was written by Alan LeMay ("The Searchers), directed by Cecil B. DeMille, and starred Gary Cooper in the title role. A superb association.

The volume is edge rubbed, sunned along the top edge, and has a hint of a slant. The edge rubbed, price clipped dust jacket, protected in a sleeve, is chipped on the spine ends and corners, and is abraded on the joints, front panel, and front flap edge.

Based on Wassell's heroic stance against orders to not save the wounded during the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Basis for the Cecil B. DeMille-directed film starring Gary Cooper. This copy also bears the contemporary signature of actor John Burton, who appeared in several films either scripted by Hilton or based on his novels, including *Lost Horizon*, *Mrs. Miniver*, and *Foreign Correspondent* (though he was not in *The Story of Dr. Wassell.*) At any rate a scarce book to find signed by both Dr. Wassell and Hilton.
