As-is, with front board of Volume I essentially detached and rear board of Volume II detached from text block and spine. Rubbing and wear to exteriors of boards. Mismatched decorations and title labels on spine, with chipping and wear to both leather and labels. Text blocks themselves remain in good condition and bound well. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce early printing of a novel set during the American Revolution by American author James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), with this work ultimately becoming his first popular piece and launching his literary career. A beautiful set of this famous novel. The Spy: a Tale of the Neutral Ground was James Fenimore Cooper's second novel, published in 1821 by Wiley & Halsted. This was the earliest American novel to win wide and permanent fame and may be said to have begun the type of romance which dominated U.S. fiction for 30 years.
