ERSKINE, Rosalind [pseud. of LONGRIDD, Roger]. The Passion-Flower Hotel. London: Jonathan Cape, 1962, 1962.

Price: US$109.50 + shipping

Description: ['Sixties literature] FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.189; [3], blank. Publisher's pink cloth, top edge blue, with typographic dust-jacket priced at 15s. A crisp clean, near fine copy in a slightly rubbed jacket. A rather racy novel about the extra curricular activities at an exclusive girls' boarding-school. An early copy of this story was sent to Cape stable-mate Ian Fleming for a possible review, perhaps due to the fact that his current publication was the most sexually explicit of his spy novels, and a shocking departure from his usual 007 capers. This copy was later part of the comprehensive James Bond collection assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencilled notes and signature within). His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. See Gilbert, pp.588, 671.

Fleming, Ian. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. Jonathan Cape, London, 1962.

Price: US$800.00 + shipping

Description: First impression, the only book in the James Bond series told from the point of view of a woman rather than from Bond's own perspective. This novel contains the most "adult content" of the Bond books, a decision Fleming later came to regret and caused him to try to give it "as short a life as possible." Though he requested that no paperback version appear, the series proved too popular in the long term and this book-length mistake has remained in the canon. Written in first person through the heroine Vivienne Michel (who is given a co-author credit on the title page), THE SPY WHO LOVED ME demonstrates the limits of the worldview that created the masculine ideal of Bond: the simple elegance of Fleming's usual style falters when pressed into a perspective fundamentally alien to him. Fleming would find his feet again in later novels, with THE SPY WHO LOVED ME demonstrating by contrast where the author's strengths lie. 7.25'' 4.75''. Original dark grey textured cloth, silver-lettered spine, knife vignette with silver-stamped blade on front board. In original unclipped (15s net) color pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping. Red endpapers. No quad mark on title page (no priority, ref. Gilbert). 221, [1] pages. Jacket with faint rubbing at joints, shallow creasing around edges and a couple very short closed tears, light foxing to rear panel primarily near fold. Book lovely with only light foxing to edges. Near fine in very good plus jacket.

Commando, adventurer and travel writer encouraged by Peter Fleming; liaised with Ian Fleming during the Moscow spy trials in the 1930s, served in Soviet Central Asia, the Western Desert Campaign, and at Churchill's personal request, behind enemy lines with Tito's partisans in Yugoslavia. Maclean was often labelled a model for James Bond, with Ian Fleming noting that 007 was "a compound of all the secret agents and commando types that I met during the war" (Bond Bound, p.26). Maclean, Peter and Ian Fleming were reunited at literary events, each being published by Jonathan Cape. Originally sold with all Maclean's copies of the Bond novels [Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, 2008], purchased by bibliographer Jon Gilbert for his Fleming Archive, where this copy has remained since. Description: The first edition, first impression of this early James Bond novel. 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is the ninth novel in the James Bond series. Complete with the unclipped dustwrapper. This story is told in the first person by a Canadian woman Vivienne Michel, as stated to the title page. In a departure from the usual style of these novels, Bonds appears in the final third of the book. This was an experiment for Fleming, who was interested in the view of Bond 'through the wrong end of a telescope, so to speak'. The first edition, first impression. A smart copy of this novel, from the popular series. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, very smart. bumping to the head and tail of spine. Small split to the head of front joint. Dustwrapper is chipped to the head and tail of spine, with minor loss. Minor tidemarks to the rear wrap. Evidence of glue from prior adhesion to the endpapers. Description: A superb first edition, first impression, of this ninth Bond novel by Ian Fleming, an exciting work. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. The first edition, first impression of this work.In the original unclipped dustwrapper by Richard Chopping.'The Spy Who Loved Me' is the ninth Bond novel, the shortest and most sexually explicit of Fleming's series. This novel is a departure from the others in the series, as it is told in first person by a young Canadian woman, Bond not appearing in the novel until two-thirds of the way through. In 1977 the novel was made into a film with Roger Moore as Bond. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, from her library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. After being widowed at 25, Audrey married the fabulously wealthy American department store heir, Marshall Field III, later divorcing him and marrying the Honorable Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, fine. Dustwrapper is lightly edge worn with some small chips. Light marks and discolouration to the wraps. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine

Description: London: Jonathan Cape, 1962 8vo., black publisher's boards with dagger motif blocked in silver to upper board; lettered in silver along spine with Jonathan Cape device to foot; red endpapers; preserved in the original unclipped Richard Chopping dust jacket (15s. net); pp. [x], 11-221, [iii]; including an illustration of 'Dreamy Pines Motor Court' to p. [vi-vii]; light compression to edges and spine tips; upper edge a trifle spotted; otherwise a very fresh, bright copy; the unrestored jacket near-fine, with light creasing and browning.  First edition, first impression.  The shortest and most sexually explicit of Fleming's Bond novels, told from the perspective of a young woman (Vivienne). The infamous protagonist himself does not appear until halfway through the novel, when he appears to rescue Viv from the clutches of two dangerous criminals. The adult content proved controversial, and reviews were mixed, prompting Fleming to try and suppress reprints of the book. Indeed, paperback versions did not appear until after the author's death in 1964.  Fleming regularly drove past a lonely motel in the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York, and it was this location that he based his 'Dreamy Pines Motor Court' on. A number of designs  for the dust jacket were proposed, including broken perfume bottles, pine cones and poison ivy, before the current design was finally confirmed.

Description: First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming’s James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Richard Chopping. In light of the novel's immense presence as a classic thriller, it's amusing to learn that it was at first poorly received. The novel was banned in several countries due to its heightened sexual writing. The reception was so bad that Fleming wrote to Michael Howard of the Jonathan Cape publishing company to explain why he wrote the book: "I had become increasingly surprised to find my thrillers, which were designed for an adult audience, being read in schools, and that young people were making a hero out of James Bond . So it crossed my mind to write a cautionary tale about Bond, to put the record straight in the minds particularly of younger readers . the experiment has obviously gone very much awry" (Chancellor 2005). Upon Fleming's request, no reprints were made until after his death in 1964. It was the basis for the tenth film in the James Bond series, starring Roger Moore, Barbara Bach and Curt Jürgens. It was directed by Lewis Gilbert and the screenplay was written by Christopher Wood and Richard Maibaum.

Description: First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming’s James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket, bookplate. Jacket design by Richard Chopping. An exceptional example.

Description: First edition, first impression, inscribed on the front free endpaper by the actress, model, and Bond girl Caroline Munro (b. 1949), "Best wishes, love Caroline Munro, aka Naomi 007", with her fan club compliments slip loosely inserted, inscribed "Dear Roger, Thank you for sending your books. Hope this finds you well - all best wishes, Caroline Munro". Munro starred in the 1977 film adaptation of The Spy Who Loved Me as Naomi, the villain Karl Stromberg's pilot and assassin, opposite Roger Moore as James Bond. This is the only Bond book to be written in the first person, presented as the testimony of a 23-year-old Canadian woman with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. To further this pretence, Vivienne Michel gets a spurious credit on the title page as co-author. Gilbert A10a (1.1). Octavo. Original dark grey boards, spine lettered in silver, dagger design stamped to front cover in silver and blind, red endpapers. With dust jacket. Double-page illustration at pp. 6-7. Minimal rubbing to extremities; unclipped jacket lightly rubbed, spine toned, faint stain to rear panel, extremities lightly nicked, discreet tape repair to spine verso: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

Description: The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming First Edition Jonathan Cape 1962. A mint copy appearing as new and unread (boards spring when opened). No foxing to contents or edges and no previous owner's name inscriptions. In original and remarkably well preserved fine dust jacket. With no nicks, tears, creasing or marks. No toning and not price clipped. An excellent copy. "The Spy Who Loved Me" is the ninth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, first published in 1962. This novel is distinct from the other Bond books because it is not told from Bond's point of view but rather from the perspective of a woman named Vivienne "Viv" Michel. In the story, Vivienne Michel finds herself in a remote motel in the Adirondack Mountains of New York after a series of unfortunate events. Her life takes an unexpected turn when two mobsters arrive, leading to a violent encounter. Just when things seem bleak, James Bond comes to her rescue, and she finds herself caught up in a dangerous espionage plot involving the mob. "The Spy Who Loved Me" is unique in the Bond series as it provides insight into a female character's perspective and portrays Bond as a secondary character. The novel was met with mixed reviews upon its release due to this departure from the traditional Bond formula. However, it remains an interesting and unconventional entry in the James Bond series, exploring themes of danger, romance, and espionage.

Ian Fleming. The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming, First Edition in Original Dust Jacket, 1962. Jonathan Cape, 1962.

Price: US$7500.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Fleming, Ian. The Spy Who Loved Me. London: Jonathan Cape, 1962. First edition, first printing. Octavo. Presented in the publisher's original dust jacket and original black cloth boards, blind and silver embossed. With a new archival quarter leather and cloth clamshell archival case. Presented is a first edition printing of Ian Fleming’s tenth James Bond thriller, The Spy Who Loved Me, in the publisher’s original dust jacket and boards. The book was published in London by Jonathan Cape in 1962. The Spy Who Loved Me is a clear departure from previous Bond novels by Ian Fleming, in that the novel is told in the first-person by a young woman named Vivienne Michel. James Bond himself actually doesn't appear until two-thirds of the way through the book and the novel itself breaks up Fleming's "Blofeld Trilogy" of books. Although the title page lists the book as being written by Ian Fleming with Vivienne Michel, the "coauthorship credit is a hoax: Vivienne Michel was the name of the wife of one of Fleming's golfing companions in Jamaica" (Biondi & Pickard, 47). Fleming "had become alarmed that his earlier thrillers, designed for an adult audience, were increasingly read in schools where young people made a hero out of James Bond He did not regard Bond as a heroic figure 'but only as an efficient professional in his job.' Therefore he had sought to write a cautionary tale to put the record straight, particularly for his younger readers. Unable to do this in his usual narrative style, he had invented a heroine 'through whom I could examine Bond from the other end of the gun barrel, so to speak'" (Lycett, 401-402). Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was an intelligence officer, journalist, and creator of the fictional British Secret service agent James Bond. Beginning in 1939, he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels. After the war, Fleming became a journalist and in 1953 published his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. It was a success, and Fleming wrote a new book each year until his untimely death in 1964. CONDITION: Book is in very good condition. Octavo. Original publisher's black cloth boards, decorated in a dagger blind stamp and silver to upper cover and spine lettering. Internally clean and healthy pages, with publisher and title page intact. With the original dust jacket. Jacket has very light sunning to upper cover, light toning to the spine, creasing and very minor chipping to spine tips and corners, but overall in excellent condition. Wrapped in new archival Mylar to protect the jacket. Book is housed in a matching quarter red leather and tan cloth clamshell case, with raised bands, gilt titles and tooling to the spine. The clamshell has an image of “The Spy Who Loves Me" dust jacket inlaid on the front and Ian Fleming’s facsimile signature embossed into its interior lining. Book Dimensions: 7 3/4 " H x 5 1/4" W x 1 1/8" D. With Clamshell: 9" H x 6 3/8" W x 1 7/8" D.

Description: Uncorrected proof copy. 8vo. Original printed paper wrappers, and rare proof dust jacket. London, Jonathan Cape. [Issued September 1961] One of a limited number of proof copies issued with a dust jacket, many having been issued without as Richard Chopping was late with the design. ?A letter from Michael Howard to Chopping confirms this: ?I understand from Ian that as you had upped the price, you had undertaken in return to do the job quickly, and, if we have to wait until November for the original picture, it will be the end of the year before we get colour proofs, and this will halve the chances of getting a good pre-publication sale. Proofs of the book are already being distributed. libraries suppliers' travellers can only carry jackets on which to elicit orders. We shall do Ian a great dis-service if we can't get his jacket out during the next month or two? (Gilbert, Ian Fleming the Bibliography, p. 329). The proof dust jacket differs to the first edition in a number of ways; ?proofs are more red in colour [.] the copyright to the front flap is markedly different and there is no 'Wilkinson Swords' credit. The front flap also features the misspelling 'Adirondacs' for 'Adirondacks' (line 6). The corners of the flaps are unclipped and the rear flap is much wider. The rear panel does not feature 'THE TIMES' newspaper reference in capitals which therefore gives a different meaning to the phrase 'Verdicts of the times!' (Gilbert). A very good copy. Water staining to the inside of the dust jacket, only effecting the recto in a small area of the front cover, some rubbing and small tears to extremities and especially to the top and tail of the spine, contemporary note to front panel ?16 ap? Paper wrappers in exceedingly good condition, and internally fine, although with slight lean to text block. With a custom made folding solander box. Gilbert, Ian Fleming the Bibliography, A10a. Uncorrected Proof Copy.
