Condition: Very Good

Description: Wells, H. G. The soul of a bishop; a novel (with just a little love in it) about conscience and religion and the real troubles of life. London: Cassell and Company, September 1917. First edition, first impression. Hardback,VG, no dustjacket. Green gloth with blind embossed decoration and title to front. Gilt lettering to spine, faded. Binding strong. Endpapers slightly tanned. 320pp., contents clean nd bright. The Soul of a Bishop tells the story of a spiritual crisis that leads Edward Scrope, Lord Bishop of Princhester, to give up his diocese in England's industrial heartland and leave the Anglican Church. The Soul of a Bishop is a novelistic treatment of themes Wells developed in another book published the same year, God the Invisible King. In that volume, which was widely discussed at the time, as in The Soul of a Bishop, Wells rejects the theological doctrine of the Trinity that he attributed to the Council of Nicaea (the novel opens with Scrope dreaming about the Council of Nicaea). Description: 320 pages. Olive boards with black print, decorated front board and spine. Quite a few pages a short cut, a printer's error; pp 243 to 256 are damaged at the tails outer edge, I suspect caused by opening uncut pages; the front end paper is missing; bookplate; faded small stamp on the tail of page 249. "Science fiction master H. G. Wells was never one to shy away from complex or controversial topics, and in this classic novel, he takes on Christianity. Though The Soul of a Bishop takes place on Earth and is wholly free of invading alien hordes or other fantastical creatures, it does deal with supernatural and mystical topics, delving into the how and why of religious belief."
