Catha, Willa. The Song of the Lark. Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1915.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Description: An attractively bound copy in finely woven blue cloth and stamped brightly in gilt on the front boards and on the spine. This copy is the first issue with the boxed ad on the copyright page and with "moment" on p. 8. It is clean and tight throughout with a few little spots in a small circle near the bottom of the fore-edges. Otherwise, a collectible copy of Cather's third novel. Cather followed Alexander's Bridge with her Prairie Trilogy —O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918). These deeply felt works became both popular and critical successes. Cather was celebrated by national critics such as H.L. Mencken for writing in plainspoken language about ordinary people. Sinclair Lewis praised her work for making "the outside world know Nebraska as no one else has done."[13]Through the 1910s and 1920s, Cather was firmly established as a major American writer, receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1922 for her novel One of Ours. (Wikipedia) First Edition with matching dates of 1915 on the title and copyright pages. And with "Published October, 1915" on the copyright page.

Description: First Edition; first printing. Owner's inscription inside the front cover; very good in a good, chipped later (original, presumably second printing) dust jacket with a couple of minor tape bleeds on the back panel. While in the same format and design as the first printing jacket, the advertisements are different, reflecting the publisher's good practice in pushing their newest list forward. After Cather's subsequent novel, My Antonia, she left this publisher. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
