London, Jack.. THE SON OF THE WOLF.. Houghton, Mifflin and Company (1900), Boston and NY, 1900.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Bright green pictorial cloth with title and illustration of trapper and dog outlined in cream; octavo; (252) pp followed by blank leaf. Frontispiece by Maynard Dixon. Moderate rubbing to cover design, minor wear to edges of covers, but very good. Collation differs from the 3 printings of the first edition described in BAL. This printing has the most regular collation with all gatherings in 8s; the last page of text independent of the last gathering and contiguous with the final blank leaf. Cover design is the same as BAL first edition, third printing "new style" binding though that issue has the title blocked in red on the front cover. The ampersand in the publisher's imprint at foot of spine is a typographic oddity bearing little resemblance to an actual ampersand. BAL 11869; Sisson/Martens page 2.

London, Jack. The Son of the Wolf; Tales of the Far North [first printing, first edition]. Houghton, Mifflin and Company. Boston and New York, 1900.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover. Bound in gray cloth with silver bely-buckle decoration, and silver 'clasps' at the corners. Some rubbing at the corners and edges of the boards has dulled the silver decorations and worn the cloth. Silver lettering on the spine also somewhat rubbed. Title page dated 1900. Copyright page also dated 1900. 251 pages. Text block tight, corners square. Ever-so-slightly shelf cocked. Pages toned from age. Pages 99-115 have bumped upper corners, with some small loss of paper, but never extending more than a scant quarter inch from the corner. Hardly noticeable when the book is closed. Ownership name on the inside front cover, in pencil. Bookplate on the free endpaper. Frontispiece illustration with tissue guard. Page edges a bit dusty (as opposed to bright and white) as expected. This is the first edition of Jack London's first book. Publication points are a bit confusing for this title, as you will see different things listed in different listings. This copy seems have all the earliest (best) points. Namely: Ampersand on the spine does NOT have periods on either side of it. Copyright page DOES have the COMMA present after the date (later changed to a period). Frontispiece illustration TIPPED IN (not sewn). On page 147, the final words of the final two lines "spruce" and "might" are perfect and unbroken. Those seem to be the primary points to indicate a first printing; if there are others you'd like me to check on, please ask. Contains The While Silence, The Son of the Wolf, The Men of Forty-Mile, In a Far Country, To the Man on Trial, The Priestly Prerogative, The Wisdom of the Trail, The Wife of a King, An Odyssey of the North. This is the first book appearance of all of these stories - they were all published in periodicals previously. London was only 24 when this was published. According to the BAL, there were only 2,028 copies of this first printing, printed in March of 1900. It was printed again in July and September. This it the earliest, preferred, printing. Please email with questions or to request photos. Please note — if there is a photograph beside this listing, it was put there by ABE, not by me, so it may not accurately show the book I am selling.

Perfect (&) On Spine (Not Present Here, At Least Design Is Not Standard Ampersand But Also Not Defective, Just A Different Symbol); 2. Perfect "E" In "Spruce" And Perfect "T" In "Might" In The Bottom Two Lines, Page 147 (Present Here, And Henry's Second And Third States And Later Issues Have Imperfect Letters); 3. An Attractive Near Fine Book With Very Slight Rubbing At Corners, No Previous Owner's Names Or Other Markings. The Son of the Wolf, his first collection of stories, draws on his experience in the Yukon. The stories tell of gambles won and lost, of endurance and sacrifice, and often turn on the qualities of exceptional women and on the relations between the white adventurers and the native tribes. (Goodreads) John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, 1876 1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone, including science fiction. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. He wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposés The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. (Wikipedia) First Edition with matching dates of 1900 on the title and copyright pages; no subsequent printings listed.
