Stoker, Bram. THE SNAKE'S PASS A NOVEL. Harper & Brothers, New York, 1890.

Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Description: [2]234,[2]pp. Octavo (20 x 14 cm). Original printed wrapper in the uniform format of the Franklin Square Library. Upper 6 cm of spine covering chipped away, with shallow loss at toe, light dust and handsoiling to wrapper, a good copy, internally very good. First US edition of Stoker's first novel, published as No. 685 of the New Series of the Franklin Square Library. The UK edition was published on the 18th of November, though postdated 1891 on the title-page. The possibility that this printing may precede the UK printing has occasionally been suggested. Predating his substantial success with DRACULA (1897), this is a tale of treasure hunting in the west of Ireland and relies more on sensational elements than any supernatural involvement. "A tale written around the strange phenomenon of a moving bog. Scene: the Mayo coast, which is finely described. Hidden treasure, prophetic dreams, attempted murder, and much love and sentiment are bound up with the story. The sentiment is pure and even lofty. There is no bigotry nor bliss, and no vulgar stage-Irishism" - Brown, IRELAND IN FICTION. BROWN 1551.

Price: US$1000.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-234 [235-236: ads], original pictorial light blue-gray wrappers printed in dark blue. First U.S. edition. Issued as "Harper's Franklin Square Library New Series," number 685. The author's first novel, published by Harper in November 1890 (so dated on front cover), possibly preceding the British edition published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, Ltd. on 18 November 1890 [but with title page postdated 1891]. Adventure novel concerning the discovery of lost treasure and the crown of the legendary king of the snakes in Western Ireland. "A tale written around the strange phenomenon of a moving bog. Scene: the Mayo coast, which is finely described. Hidden treasure, prophetic dreams, attempted murder, and much love and sentiment are bound up with the story." - Brown, Ireland in Fiction 1551. Dalby 5b. Some patchy fading and dust soiling to covers, small tape mends at spine ends, a very good copy. (#153296)

Stoker, Bram. THE SNAKE'S PASS. Harpers, 1890.

Price: US$1628.50 + shipping

Description: THE SNAKE'S PASS, Harpers, 1890, first American edition, spine renewed with most of original printed section preserved, some foxing and soiling to the covers, else vg in wraps. Possibly precedes the English edition as "November, 1890" is printed at the base of the front cover. The English edition was allegedly published on 11/18/1890 while dated 1891 on the title page. The date of actual publication of this, the American edition, may well be before this and in fact, may have even been actually released in October of 1890 if distribution of paper items such as this followed the magazine market. Very scarce. The authors first novel.
