"Steinbeck's only work of political satire turns the French Revolution on its head, as amateur astronomer Pippin Heristal is drafted in to rule the unruly French. Enchanting comedy ensues as Steinbeck creates the most hilarious royal court ever around the brief, bold reign of the corduroy-clad Pippin, his social-climbing wife Maria, his star-struck daughter Clotilde and her Caifornian beau, Todd." - from goodreads dot com. "The book, a fabrication . is about Pippin Heristal, an amateur astronomer who is proclaimed the King of France as he's descended from Charlemagne. He is really appointed to give some people with revolutionary intent a monarchy to revolt against. Pippin becomes king but dislikes the lack of a private life and living at Versailles. Howerver, what really upsets him is that although he's an all-powerful king and people do as he asks, Pippin dioesn't seem to be able to change anything." - from goodreads dot com reviewer. ".by turns playful and philosophical. Steinbeck gently chastises human beings for their "tendency . to distrust good fortune," he cannot conceal his deep and abiding faith in humanity; a quality that is unmistakably Steinbeckian and one that characterizes all of his works."

(Goldstone & Payne A36a)à ¿½ à ¿½ à ¿½ à ¿½ Generally considered as one of Steinbeck's lesser books, this book did become popular enough to be a book-of-the-month selection. This is Steinbeck's only work of political satire and tells the story of an amateur astronomer, Pippin, who is proclaimed King of France. He spends most of his time trying to avoid any responsibilities and deal with hangers-on with inherited money. Much of the satire is clearly relatable to today's people and politics as well

''Dear Mr. Goodpasture: This small piece of innocent insanity backs up Bridey Murphy. There is an [tale] here somewhere. It s one of those things that just bursts out and astonishes the writer as much as the reader or maybe more. I hope you get a little laughter from it. Yours, John Steinbeck.'' Steinbeck s illusion to Bridey Murphy is interesting. The story of Bridey Murphy was first told in a series of articles by William J. Barker, published in the Denver Post in 1954. In it, housewife Virginia Tighe, claimed to be in a past life an Irish house wife, Bridey Murphy, and under hypnosis told amazing tales of her former life. In early 1956, Doubleday released a book: The Search for Bridey Murphy. These unrevised galley proofs are printed on rectos only, with two publisher labels affixed to front cover. The first is numbered #24 and includes publication information. Below it is another label with three paragraphs about the book. Lower right corner of this is missing, effecting portions of last two lines of text. [See illustration]. The proof has none of the preliminaries set in type nor any of the William Penn DuBois illustrations. Not recorded by Goldstone & Payne. A rather scare item for the Steinbeck specialist.
