Description: King's stunning third book (far superior to the movie, which he hated), with a nearly pristine original issue DJ illustrated by Dave Christensen. Same design as on the First Edition, but this is a Book Club Edition, slightly larger (6.25" x 9.5"), in 447 pages. Tan paper over quarter black cloth-covered boards, lettered in bright gilt to spine, is in Near Fine condition, marred only by light soil & dust dulling to external page surfaces. Else, clean & crisp, pages creamy white & completely unmarked EXCEPT for this writing: looks like someone attempted to forge King's signature on the half-title page: based on our professional experience, it just looks & feels & smells wrong. The unclipped (no price) DJ VG+, with extremely slight edgewear, including some light crazing/wrinkling at both ends of spine & vertically along back cover-spine interface around midway; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Near fine early trade printing in same first edition wrapper. A benchmark in the literary career of Stephen King and his third published novel following Carrie and 'Salem's Lot. The Shining stands as a cultural icon of modern horror, a searing study of a family torn apart, and a nightmarish glimpse into the dark recesses of human weakness and dementia. The Overlook Hotel claimed the most beautiful setting of any resort in the world, but the Torrance family saw much more than its splendor. Danny, blessed - or cursed - with a shining, precognitive gift saw visions hideously beyond the comprehension of a small boy. For Jack, Wendy, and their young son it is a place where past horrors come to life. And where those gifted with the shining do battle with the darkest evils. This tale of a troubled man hired to care for a remote mountain resort over the winter, slowly but steadily unfolds as secrets from the hotel's past are revealed, and the hotel itself attempts to claim the very souls of the Torrance family. "YOU'RE THE CARETAKER, SIR. YOU'VE ALWAYS BEEN THE CARETAKER. I SHOULD KNOW, SIR. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN HERE. " Rare tangible. 447 pages. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" design. Printed in the U.S.A. Insured post. God yes, Religion no. what is the one thing that all the major religions of the world find difficulty with ??? In your face religion. Stanley got his revenge at Religious hypocrisy. The page block edges are a little toned commensurate with age. No foxing. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped showing the correct USD 8.95 price on the flap. No chips and no tears. Usual light fading to the spine and ghosting to reverse along the folds where the dust jacket touched the black cloth spine of the book. A beautiful specimen of a landmark book. The Shining had a first edition print run of 25,000 copies which is low for Stephen King novels nowadays where the first print run goes into the hundreds of thousands if not millions. Curiously, the first print run seems not not have been should out as there are many copies around which were remaindered with a black dotted coat of spray. The Shining is perhaps King’s most famous novel not least due to Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation (1980). First and Fine
