Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A Near Fine copy with previous owner stamp to the front flyleaf in a Very Good plus, unclipped dust jacket with a small chip to the head of the spine and some wear to the spine heel. This story of a young black girl who sets out to find a "secret river" with enough fish to feed her struggling family, was intended to be a longer work of novel length that would address the universal child and the enchantment of childhood imagination. But Rawlings' bouts of writer's block prevented her from expanding the length of this poignant children's tale. The story was not published during her lifetime (she died in 1953) and remained in manuscript form until it was found in her papers after her death. It is her only children's story, and the only fully realized work that she left unpublished. Even though there were reportedly 18,000 copies printed in the First Printing, this is a very elusive Rawlings title in collector's condition.

Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan; Weisgard, Leonard. THE SECRET RIVER. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1955.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Description: Scarce first printing of this Newbery Honor-winning work by the author of THE YEARLING, a magical realism tale of a young Black girl's efforts to feed her community during the Great Depression. THE SECRET RIVER turned up among Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's papers after her death, a fully finished manuscript "quite different in style from her other work" (Introduction). Printed on brown paper with richly textured black-and-white illustrations by Leonard Weisgard, the physical form of this book creates additional atmosphere for Rawlings's story of a Florida forest. Issued at a period when US publishers rarely showcased Black heroes in children's books, it set the stage for other award-winning books like THE SNOWY DAY - though a Black author would not win the Newbery Honor until Virginia Hamilton in 1974, with M.C. HIGGINS, THE GREAT. 8'' x 6''. Original brown pictorial cloth binding. Original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in black and white. Unpaginated, printed on brown paper. Jacket with light edgewear, a bit of loss to lower spine; one small tape reinforcement to verso. Binding with mild bumping to spine ends. Tight and clean. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.

Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan; Weisgard, Leonard (illus). The Secret River. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1955.

Price: US$950.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition. Hardcover. First edition (with "A" on title page), signed by Weisgard on ffep. Published posthumously, it is understood that she and her editor held back publishing it hoping to expand it into a larger work. Richly illustrated by Weisgard, the story is lovely in its own right and was Rawlings only true "children's" book. Quite rare as Weisgard did not sign a great number of books; a very handsome copy. Minimal shelf/edge wear, artist's signature on ffep, else tight, bright and unmarred. DJ shows very minor shelf/edge wear, hint of toning at spine, small closed tear at rear of head, else bright and clean. Brown cloth boards, white ink lettering and pictorial elements, brown paper leaves. Small 8vo. np. Illus. (black and white ink plates).
