Description: 1949. No Edition Remarks. 248 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Yellow cloth. Library copy, with expected inserts and inscriptions. Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing. Top edge of text block has been dyed, slightly staining each page. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Boards are bowed. Small split to spine head at joint.

Description: An early mystery-thriller by Brown, who learned his craft writing for the mystery and sci-fi pulps and whose work fostererd a fan cult that continues a half-century after his death. When Brown is good, he is very, very good and "The Screaming Mimi" is one of those. An Irish, alcoholic newspaper reporter in Chicago is so affected by the beauty of the fourth victim of a serial killer that he sobers up enough to begin his own hunt for the killer. As he gets close to his goal, he finds himself the target of madness and death. The book became the basis for a 1958 movie starring Anita Eckberg and Gypsy Rose Lee. This copy is a Dutton's book club, "Guilt Edged Mystery," First Edition Thus. 248 pages in bright yellow cloth boards showing slightly bumped corners and light surface wear. Text shows a bit of age-tanning and light foxing on the end papers and edges, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, binding tight and square. Sorry, no dustjacket. Makes a very decent reading copy of one of Brown's classic stories.

Clean text, lightly worn bottom edge of cloth, some foxing to outer edge of text block. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front endpaper. In publisher's dust jacket, $2.50 on front flap, lightly soiled from handling, chipping at edges of spine, some toning to spine. Fredric Brown was an American science fiction, mystery, short fantasy and black comedy writer. His first novel, The Fabulous Clipjoint, won an Edgar Award for outstanding mystery novel. Another novel, The Screaming Mimi, was adapted into a film in 1958. He is widely considered one of the best Science Fiction Writers of the 20th Century. Fredric Brown died in 1972, having published over 100 works of fiction. Since his death, many of his early pulp novels have been republished and have found a cult following.
