JAMES, Henry. The Sacred Fount. London: Methuen & Co., 1901.

Price: US$128.03 + shipping

Description: First British edition. 8vo. (iv), 316, 47, (1) pp. Publisher's crimson cloth, gilt lettered to the spine and upper board, the latter with elaborate blindstamped decoration, the bookplate of a Mary Landon Baker featuring an illustration of a Venetian palazzo to the front pastedown. Mild fading to the spine and slight bumping to the ends and the corners, very good overall. Mary Landon Baker (1901-61) was an American socialite who cut quite a dash through US and, later, European high societies. She was described as "Chicago's best gift to Europe" and purportedly received 65 marriage proposals. Baker famously jilted one lover three times, to the point where "Mary Bakered" became a common colloquial phrase to describe someone who had not turned up for an important event. Edel and Laurence, A55b. Scarcer than the first US edition published by Scribner's nine days earlier. This is the first issue with the catalogue at the rear dated "November 1900". The work sold poorly, but was reissued twice ten years later off the back of his more successful work "The Outcry". The publishers used the remaining sheets from the original printing, with the catalogue at the rear dated either March or August 1911.

Henry James. The Sacred Fount. Methuen & Co, London, 1901.

Price: US$230.45 + shipping

Description: A later reissue of the first edition of Henry James' strange but wonderful novel, 'The Sacred Fount', in which the narrator tries to figure out the love lives of his fellow guests at a party. With a half-title. With thirty-one pages of publisher's adverts to the rear, dated March 1911. This novel sold badly when it was first published in 1901, and was the poorest selling of all of Henry James' books by Methuen. In 1911, the publishers were encouraged by the success of 'The Outcry', and so bound remaining sheets of the first edition and reissued them. This explains the inclusion of publisher's adverts dated 1911. In 'The Sacred Fount' an unnamed narrator attempts to discover the truth about the loves lives of a variety of guests he is with at a weekend party somewhere in the English countryside. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little fading to the spine, and minor fading to the front board. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed
