Gold text is intact on front panel; it's mostly rubbed off on the spine but still legible as text is impressed. Damp stain marks at lower front corners and along the lower third of the back panel. Books is internally clean and text block is solid. Charming graphics on jacket which is mostly intact, rare for a book of this age. Jacket is soiled overall, and more so on the spine and fore-edge folds. Lower third of back panel shows where damp stain bled through from the boards. Internally clean and an overall tight and bright copy. very good There are two first state dust jackets--this copy has the less colourful cream coloured jacket, which seems to be more suspectible to damage and, as such, scarce in this condition. The last complete novel by Conrad, taking place in France during the French Revolution on the south coast. This book was later adapted into the 1967 Italian film, L'Avventuriero, starring Rita Hayworth and Anthony Quinn.

It was the basis for the 1967 film L'avventuriero (internationally released as The Rover) directed by Terence Young and starring Anthony Quinn.
