The text is illustrated with numerous quarter page and small vignettes and the occasional full-page illustrations in black-and-white, by James Holland. Green coloured cloth with white illustration on the front panel and white writing on the front panel and spine. Red coloured tint to the top textblock edge. A novel set in the American South during the expansion west. Softening to the backstrip edges and to the book corners. The spine is very cocked and there is browning to the paper edges. The spine has become completely faded by the sun, and there is sun damage to the top 0.25 "of the front panel and to approximately half of the back panel. Description: A rare edition of this book "The Robber Bridegroom " published by the Bodley Head, but unfortunately this book does not have it's dust jacket. The book is clean and neat, filled with beatiful drawings by James Holland. The end papers have white line drawings of heads on a brown/red ground.The book is in good condition, with no major faults.The spine has faded slightly and there is a slight turn to the top and bottom of spine.There is a slight fading to the back cover where sunlight has faded the green cover around a book that has stood alongside it.Fading to the bottom front corner. The book is firm and the pages bright with only the very slightest hint of browning (can hardly be seen ) Altogether this is an excellent copy of this hard to find book.

Inscribed by the author: "For George Bixby with best wishes, Eudora Welty. May 25, 1972." The recipient, George Bixby, published Welty's essays *A Pageant of Birds* and *A Sweet Devouring* at his Albondocani Press series. The author's very uncommon second book. Copies of this wartime title are very uncommon, especially signed.
