Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, a later copy of the run of the first printing with imperfect type on line 4 p. 34 (though perfect type there is noted in definitely later second printings), imperfect page number 121, and no page number or caption p.129. These points indicate probably later copies of the first printing due to type damage during the first press run and a deliberate change to p. 129. (The listing for this title in Bibliographia Oziana includes copies with and without these differences and type imperfections all as "First edition, first state" of the four printings that they list for this title). This copy is also in the first state of the two pages of advertising at the end with Laura Bancroft listings on p. 263 and 4 Baum titles listed through John Dough and the Cherub on p. 264. Also in the first binding of smooth light green cloth with the publisher's imprint at the foot of the spine in capital and lower-case letters (not large and small capital letters only). Bibliographia Oziana p. 51 1 with color tinted gatherings as listed there. (They conclude however, that there is insufficient evidence to classify the color tint variations as separate printings). Original color pictorial light green smooth textured cloth, red and black pictorial endpapers. Very good with some rubbing and wear to the cloth printing (there is just a ghost of the head outline of Toto on the middle of the spine). Minor wear to edges, corner and extremities. Small .75 inch closed tear without loss front margin only p.65 and 2.5 inched close tear without loss from bottom margin of pp. 129. Sheets clean, complete. H10709 All Items Are Sent Insured. Baum, L. Frank. The Road to Oz. Chicago: The Reilly & Britton Co., 1909.

Price: US$900.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Illustrated by John R. Neill. First edition, mixed state on different colored stock with most of the first state points present, but with the typographical damage to words "Toto on" on p. 34 and page number on p. 121 (not found in true first state); in Binding A with publisher's name on spine imprint in uppercase and lowercase letters. Publisher's original green cloth, with illustrations by John R. Neill stamped to front board, red and black pictorial endpapers; lacking dust jacket as usual. About very good, with rubbing to illustrations on boards, illustration to spine mostly faded, light wear to tail of spine and lower board corners, and some minor imperfections to pages, including a bit of soiling to bottom of pp. 76-77, and some pages with small closed tears. Overall, a solid copy of a classic title from the Oz universe. The fifth of Baum's Oz books, The Road to Oz documents Dorothy's journey with her dog Toto through a series of adventures as they attempt to show an old man the way to a neighboring town. Along the way, they meet some characters including Button-Bright, a little boy who is perpetually lost, and Polychrome, the daughter of the Rainbow. Eventually, their journey leads them to the Land of Oz, where they celebrate Princess Ozma's birthday. Interestingly, the book was first printed with pages of different colored stock to represent the colors of each country through which Dorothy travels throughout the story.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition of this joyfully printed Oz book, with gatherings of the paper in various colorful hues - lavender, pink, green, blue, and more - a beautiful, bright copy. THE ROAD TO OZ introduces the Shaggy Man, Button-Bright, and Polychrome into the Oz universe - and brings Toto back into the fantasy land. This entry is also unusual in the series for its publishers playing with the use of color paper instead of separately inserted color plates. This experiment was only attempted for the first printing, making true first editions of this title particularly compelling (and colorful) objects. 9'' x 6.5''. Original green pictorial cloth stamped in black, green, tan and red to both boards. "Reilly & Britton" on spine in upper and lower cases (Bienvenue binding A). Pictorial endpapers in black and red. No type damage on pages 34, 121, caption and numeral on page 129. No color plates as issued, but a profusion of black-and-white images throughout by Neill. Printed on sheaves of color-printed paper: off-white, lavender, gray, light blue, salmon, tan, light green, tan. Publisher's ads at rear. 261, [1], [2] pages. Mild bumping to corners, faint spotting to boards; touches of soil to a small number of pages. Bright, with strong hinges.
