Description: First edition thus; early printing; stated Copyright 1883 by Estes and Lauriat. Rare example from HM Caldwell Company. Larger 7" x 9" format than similar designs from Estes & Lauriat. Fine green cloth spine wrap wrapping to back board, floral and leaf decoration to front cover, moderate shelf wear, rub. Beautiful gilt cover titles surrounded by circular pattern of bells and leaves. Heavy stock coated pages, near fine. Attractive antiquarian inscription and signature at front blank endpaper: "Miss Kitty H. Miller, Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, Dec. 25th, 1902. Remembrance of Muril." Amazingly haunting illustrations throughout. Very attractive. String-bind good; hinges intact. Includes twenty-seven dramatic illustrations by Gustave Doré, Birkett Foster, et al. Scarce very good illustrated edition. Coleridge's masterpiece concerns a sailor who offends nature by killing a seabird takes the listener on a macabre odyssey that includes brushes with monsters, a ship manned by zombies, and a game of dice with Death.
