Douglas Adams. THE RESTAURANT AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE (First hardcover edition - first printing). Arthur Barker Limited, London, 1980.

Price: US$161.03 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First printing of the first hardcover edition. The book was originally published in the same year as a Pan Original paperback. The hardcover editions were aimed mainly at public libraries and are quite scarce. With the striking dustwrapper design by Andrew Kay, using an illustration by Mike Litherland. ***Very good in dark-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine very slightly creased. Corners sharp. The boards are clean, with just some small marks to the back board. The edges of the page block are very slightly foxed. Internally also very good with no inscriptions - just a small stain at the top edge of the front free endpaper. Pages clean with no creases or tears. There is a very slight reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good dustwrapper, which is unpriced by the publisher (the export issue variant). The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips or tears, and very little creasing. The spine of the dustwrapper is quite clean, with just a small stain. The front panel of the dustwrapper is bright, but there is some light staining at the bottom edge of the back panel. ***187 pages. 224mm x 148mm. ***'Milliways, the restaurant of the title, has been projected forward in time to the exact moment of the end of the universe. While galactic gourmets sample delectable dishes they watch in total comfort as constellations collide and asteroids explode in what can only be described as the ultimate cabaret. For followers of "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" on radio and television, Douglas Adam's second book will provide a lasting contribution to a superlative flight of fancy.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A very good copy of the first hardcover edition of "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe", hard to find now in the true Arthur Barker first printing. A Book Club Associates edition was also produced in the following year, with a much higher print-run than this original edition. Of interest to collectors of the work of Douglas Adams, and Science Fiction first editions. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Price: US$4186.85 + shipping

Description: First hardback editions, first impressions, of the first two instalments of the 20th century's most popular science fiction comedy series. Both were first published as paperbacks by Pan Books several months prior to their hardback appearance. Adams adapted The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy into a series of best-selling novels after the story's initial success as a radio show. The purposefully misnamed "trilogy in five books", published between 1979 and 1992, follows the adventures of Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect; a posthumous sixth book was written by Eoin Colfer in 2009. The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been translated into more than 30 languages. 2 works, octavo. Original blue and green boards, spines lettered in gilt. With dust jackets. Hitch Hiker's Guide: Spine ends slightly bumped; spine panel of unclipped jacket sunned at head, small stain at foot of rear and spine panels, a few nicks. Restaurant: Scotton House ex-libris on front free endpaper. Corners slightly bumped, top edge foxed; edges of unclipped jacket nicked, short closed tear to head of rear panel, upper corner of rear flap chipped: near-fine copies in like jackets.
