The Garden City & New York edition published by Doubleday, Page & Co. in 8vo also during 1920 is the First Edition. It was published before the first English edition, though in the same year. Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Description: London & Toronto: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1920. Original green cloth stamped in gilt, with dust jacket. First English Trade Edition (issued after the American edition and also after a 40-copy private issue of the English galley proofs). Begun in 1896, and in effect completing the trilogy begun with ALMAYER'S FOLLY and AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS, "THE RESCUE was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career almost until the end of his life" [Cagle]. This copy is in the standard (primary) binding: the spine lettering is in gilt, and the front cover publisher's device and border are in blind. (There is a secondary binding with black lettering and border, and with no front cover device.) This volume is in fine, bright condition; the pictorial jacket, which unlike that of THE ROVER does not often turn up in presentable condition, is very good-plus -- light edge-wear (to be expected since the jacket stands a bit taller than the volume), and spine slightly tanned. Conrad, Joseph. THE RESCUE. A Romance of the Shallows. , 1920.

Price: US$625.00 + shipping

Description: London & Toronto: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1920. Original green cloth lettered and with border in black, with dust jacket. Supino provides some of Bruccoli & Reheault's thorough explanation for the curious presence of various printed "imposition numbers" that appear at the bottom of many pages -- for example "(17)" on the title page itself; it has to do with two separate printers being involved. This copy is in the secondary binding: the spine lettering and the front cover border are in black, and there is no publisher's device blind-stamped onto the front cover. It is in near-fine condition (minor wear on the bottom edge); the pictorial jacket, which unlike that of THE ROVER does not often turn up in presentable condition, is very good-plus (slightly soiled and darkened, a few short edge tears). Supino A22.7.0, binding state B (this copy); Cagle A49b(2), binding "b". Provenance: the front endpaper bears the discreet ink-stamp of bookseller "Wm. Tyrrell & Co. | Toronto" (both Cagle and Supino were unable to locate a copy of the "Canadian issue" of this first impression, so these secondary-binding copies might be it). Further provenance: endpaper signature of "Rosemary Eakins | 1972" (probably [1931-1987] the McGill University author of literary criticism); also, discreet bookplate of the Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino.

First English Trade Edition (issued after the American edition and also after a 40-copy private issue of the English galley proofs). This copy is in the standard (primary) binding: the spine lettering is in gilt, and the front cover publisher's device and border are in blind. Conrad, Joseph. The Rescue. J.M. Dent, London, 1920.

Price: US$1000.00 + shipping

Description: First English edition, second (first published) issue. 416 pp. 8vo. Signed by R.B. Cunninghame Graham. Presented by R.B. Cunninghame Graham with his inscription to front free endpaper. Conrad's friendship with Graham began when Graham sent an enthusiastic letter praising "An Outpost of Progress," a tale he had read in Cosmopolis which criticizes the colonial system. In his biography Joseph Conrad A Chronicle, Zdzishaw Najder asserts: "Graham was undoubtedly closer to Conrad than Garnett or Galsworthy, who held far more moderate views . [they] had a great deal in common . their skepticism of human nature, their hatred of tyranny and exploitation, their exasperation at the stupidity of individuals and institutions . Graham was Conrad's first intellectual friend of about his own age: the five years differencer between them was insignificant compared with the ten to sixteen years that separated Conrad from his younger friendsGarnett, Galsworthy, Sanderson, Ford and Crane." Conrad had wished to dedicate "Youth" to Graham, and apologized in a letter to his publisher Blackwood: "I do not share his political convictions . but we have enough ideas in common to base a strong friendship upon." In the end, the volume was dedicated to Mrs Conrad. Typhoon and Other Stories, however, was dedicated to Graham, and Graham wrote the introduction to the posthumous collection Tales of Hearsay. Cagle A49b; Keating 133; Wise 57 Original green cloth, spine gilt though slightly faded, a little shaken. Very good First English edition, second (first published) issue.

Conrad, Joseph. THE RESCUE. A Romance of the Shallows. , 1920.

Price: US$1250.00 + shipping

Description: Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1920. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition, published a month before Dent's London edition. THE RESCUE was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career until almost the end of his life. It was begun in 1896 [as THE RESCUER, the concluding volume of the trilogy begun with ALMAYER'S FOLLY and AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS] -- as an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Lingard. But the book just would not sort itself out and it took Conrad another twenty years, working on it sporadically, before the much laboured-over manuscript was finally completed 25 May 1919 [Cagle]. This copy is from the first printing (gathered in 8s -- the second printing is virtually identical but is gathered in 16s; there was also a third 1920 printing, in 16s, but bound in the limp-leather "Deep Sea" binding). Included is the very scarce dust jacket, unusual for the DP&Co Conrad books in that it is pictorial; it is in the second of three states, with the $1.90 price on the front turn-in increased to $2.00 with an over-stamp (the first state, which we have never seen, has just the $1.90 price; the third state has just the $2.00 price). This is a fine, bright copy; the jacket is near-fine with minor wear at the foot of its spine (barely affecting the letter "P"). In our experience this jacket is scarcer than several earlier American Conrad jackets; it is also much scarcer than the Dent edition's jacket. Supino A22.1.0 (this copy); Cagle A49a(1). Provenance: discreet bookplate of the Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino (his brief penciled notation also appears on the endpaper).

Price: US$1806.09 + shipping

Description: First UK trade edition, first printing. Signed presentation copy. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine. A very good copy, the binding square and the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with the bookplate of Sir Robert Jones to the front pastedown and a nick to the fore-edge of the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. The inner rear hinge is cracked but holding (a common issue with this title due to the size and weight of the 416 page text block). Inscribed by the author in black ink on the front endpaper "Sir Robert Jones / with the greatest / regard and affection / from Joseph Conrad / 1920". The recipient, an eminent surgeon and pioneer of orthopaedics, was treating Conrad's wife Jessie. Whilst the last of the three novels in the 'Lingard Trilogy' to be published, after Almayer's Folly (1895) and An Outcast of the Islands (1896), the events related in The Rescue (based on Conrad's experience as mate on the steamer Vidar) precede the earlier publications.
