Description: First impression of the first UK edition of the author's first novel, and the first of Nabokov's works to appear in the UK, following the American New Directions printing of 1941. ***Near fine in dark brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decorative border to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Boards clean and unmarked. No bumps - edges of boards just slightly rubbed and creased. Corners sharp. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Paper stock slightly tanned, but much less than usual (Wartime Economy standard paper used). Virtually no foxing. Interior pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a good original colour printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net. Whilst largely complete, the edges of the dustwrapper are creased, chipped, nicked and rubbed. Small loss and creasing to the corners of the dustwrapper. Some light creasing to the bottom edge of the front panel, and a chip to the head of the spine with associated small loss to the top edge of the front panel adjoining the spine. Small chip and creasing to the tail of the spine, and some loss to the centre of the spine of the dustwrapper. Back panel of the dustwrapper is tanned but clean and unmarked. Spine of dustwrapper faded. (Please see scans) ***190mm x 128mm. 179 pages. ***First impression of the first UK edition of Vladimir Nabokov's first novel. A fragile war-time economy standard production book - very hard to find copies now in their original thin dustwrappers. Square, tight and clean throughout save some light uniform off-setting to end-papers due to jacket flaps. A touch of bumping to spine ends. Very attractive clipped dust-jacket, ($3.00 price stamped on top of front flap), has some minor wear to edges and tips. A couple of miniscule nicks to the spine ends. Tiny hole in spine panel. Still bright with no crease or tears. A very pretty collectable copy.
