Description: 7 1/8 inches x 10 5/8 in. x 1 5/8 in. (thick), colored frontispiece; title-page printed in red and black; preface; publisher's note; table of Huntsmen & Whippers-In; contents; list of Alken illustrations; list of Alken illustrations: tail pieces; color map. xxiii, pp. [1]-396 including index and errata + 16 pp. Nimmo catalogue, dated November 1898; with the 10 colored plates (two of the plates are double-page, each with two images across the plates, giving 12 illustrations), and other illustrations. Red cloth with titling gilt on the spine and with a gilt hunting design, and a gold lettered title on the front cover, with hunting design in gold and black, gray stamped borders on the spine and front cover, top-edge gilt, blue coated endpapers. Housed in a dark blue cloth-covered clamshell box with a brown leather, gilt title label on the spine, marble design paper on the inner covers of the box. With the bookseller's ticket of Harry F. Marks, New York City, on the lower left of the back coated paper paste-down. The spine shows some darkening to the cloth, very light wear to the spine ends, cover corners; the front inner coated paper hinge shows a crack to the coated paper. The leather spine label shows some of the leather surface worn away, light rubbing to the clamshell box corners, edges. Overall, a fine copy of a heavy, delicate, and scarce book. "Publisher's Note: The hand-coloured plates and other illustrations, all after Henry Alken, are among the best and most spirited of his drawings.
