Description: London. William Heinemann Ltd. 1956. First Edition. Third Impression. First published the previous year; this is the second printing of the following year. Hard Cover. Crown Octavo 7½" by 5" (190 mm x 126 mm) 247 pp. Dark blue publisher's boards with gilt titles to the spine. A little wear at the spine ends and top two corners have very minor knocks. There is a dint to the bottom of the lower board and some minor patchy marks to the board surface. Strip of toning to the endpapers and gift inscription to the ffep dated November 1956. The first seven pages have a very small flattened dog ear and all edges are a little grubby. The text block is clean and unmarked. Binding is tight and square. Boards have a slight lean. Dust wrapper is clipped, grubby to the rear and wear to the flap junctions withthe wraps. Spine ends are chipped and torn; there has been some neat repair using professional tape. There is a larger chip to the rear flap junction. The book and jacket have both sustained some damage; the book is good the jacket fair. improves immeasurably in mylar and an early reprint of this title is quite uncommon. Narrated in the first person by journalist Thomas Fowler, the novel depicts the breakdown of French colonialism in Vietnam and early American involvement in the Vietnam War. A subplot concerns a love triangle between Fowler, an American CIA agent named Alden Pyle, and Phuong, a young Vietnamese woman. This was his fifteenth standalone novel.
