Description: FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 6.5 inches. 58 pp. Bound in original unbleached linen, with gilt and black titles and colour blocks of Greenaway drawings on both boards. All edges gilt. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 28 Kate Greenaway colour paintings, including frontispiece and title page vignette. Children's story set in a California mining camp during the Gold Rush period, by US short story write, Bret Harte (1836-1902). The illustrator,Catherine (Kate) Greenaway (1846-1901) was the daughter of a London wood engraver and spent twelve years of art college education in the city. Her work was greatly influenced by childhood holidays in the Nottinghamshire countryside and she chose a vaguely Regency style of costume for her figures. Her first book illustration was published in 1867, but she did not achieve widespread recognition until Edmund Evans (1826-1901), wood engraver and colour printer, printed her illustrated book of verses, Under the Window, in 1879. It sold 100,000 copies in her lifetime. Greenaway's paintings were reproduced by chromoxylography, the colours being printed from hand-engraved wood blocks by Evans. Becoming an artistic celebrity she came under the influence of the ageing John Ruskin who greatly admired her female figures. Along with Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway is ranked as one of the three great illustrators of Victorian children's books and her work remains in print today. Price: US$325.00 + shipping

Description: [illustrated by Kate Greenaway] London: Chatto and Windus, n.d. [1886]. Original olive linen with color pictorial covers, all page edges red. First Edition of this 58-page children's fantasy tale that includes 28 color illustrations by Kate Greenaway. There is a very similar American edition, actually printed and bound in the U.K. at the same time as this edition, with a Houghton Mifflin title page that bears the date 1887. This copy is in what Blanck calls "binding C(B?)" -- pictorial olive linen, page edges stained red, white endpapers; binding A with gilt page edges is believed to have been the first, or certainly the most expensive, but the order of the other two is unknown. It is in remarkably fine condition, without soil or wear -- and is rather uncommon thus. Blanck 7337 (binding "C(B?)").

Description: "The Queen of the Pirate Isle" by Bret Harte and illustrated by Kate Greenaway. Chatto & Windus, London. 1886 first UK edition, light spotting and offsetting, publisher's cloth, lightly rubbed, loosely inserted autograph letter signed by Greenaway. In the letter, dated 2 April 1889, Greenaway writes to booksellers Palmer & Howe of Manchester, apparently enclosing the original drawings for Queen of the Pirate Isle; according to Spielmann and Layard, she sold her Pied Piper and 1893 Almanack illustrations to them (Spielmann, pp.172, 182). "I think the getting up of the book very nice," she writes, "but of course the drawings would look far better and cleaner if they were surrounded by raised mounts".

"Mr. Bret Harte has written a children's Christmas book, with the alluring title of "The Queen of the Pirate Isle," which will be illustrated by twenty-five [28] drawings by Miss Kate Greenaway, printed in colors in the text. The result of this combination of one of the most English of artists with one of the most American of authors will be awaited with unusual interest" (The Nation, Vol. 43, No. 1102, August 12, 1886, p. 138). The Queen of the Pirate Isle is a short story set in and around a mining camp in gold-rush California - a milieu that features in almost all of Bret Harte's work. The four young protagonists - imaginative Polly (the "Queen"), her cousin Hickory Hunt, their Chinese "page" Wan Lee, and neighbor-boy Patsey - are all children, have extremely vivid imaginations, and Harte relates their adventures playing pirate - in fantasy, dream, and reality. Bret Harte lived in London from the 1880s through his death in 1902. Lady Alfred Paget, née Cecilia Wyndham (1830-1914) "a woman of remarkable intellectual powers" (NY Times obituary, May 4, 1914), was a lady in waiting to Queen Victoria (who was godmother to one of the Paget children), and owned Chateau Garibondy on the Riviera in the south of France where she entertained royalty and the intellectual cream of Great Britain. She likely met Harte at one of his popular London lectures, always attended by a distinguished audience. BAL 7337. Sharnhorst 902. Schuster and Engen 165.1f.
