Description: Small octavo. Pp. [1] 330 [6]. Although this was the first novel written by Charlotte Bronte, it was not published until 1857, after her death in 1855. The American edition appeared iin the same year as the London Smith, Elder first edition. Although Currer Bell is listed as author on both wrappers, The Professor is listed with "The Bronte Novels" in the advertisement on the back. A paperback copy (with Price Sixty Cents on the front) is unusual. Both wrappers are detached, and the back one is tattered. Foxing throughout; lean to spine, and paper worn off the spine. However, it is complete.

Description: Binding by Riviere & Son,full crushed morocco, spines with raised bands in six panels, lettered and typically decorated in gilt, covers bordered with a triple-gilt-rule box, the edges with two gilt rules, the turn-ins decorated in gilt. Top edges gilt. Blue endpapers. Vol.I: Viii,294p. Vol.II: [4]258[1,blank]p. With both half-titles. Vol.I lacks the 2p adv for Mrs. Gaskell's "Memoirs of Currer Bell" and Vol.II lacks the 8p adv for the uniform edition of of the works of Currer Bell and the following 16p publishers' catalogue dated June 1857. In Vol.I, following the preface, is a note by Arthur Bell Nicholls ((1819-1906), Charlotte Bronte's husband, expaining the delayed publication of this early work. A water stain has darkened portions of the covers of both volumes, not affecting the spines. The lower outer higes of both volumes are partly separated. Texts of both volumes clean and unmarked. Description: Octavos. Tasteful later rebindings in finely-pebbled brown cloth with the titles gilt (attributing authorship to Brontë) on the spine, top-edges gilt. The true first edition, with the 16 pages of advertisements dated June, 1857 at the rear of Volume 2, and the 2-page advert for Mrs. Gaskell's "Life of Charlotte Brontë" (the second edition â€" the "memoir" would go into a third edition before the end of 1857, such was the public's curiosity regarding the elusive Bell/Brontë family) at the rear of Volume 1. A bright, clean set.

Description: Octavos. Vol.1: (viii) 294pp. 2pp. Vol.2: 258pp. [1] 8pp. Original period brown morocco boards, spine with gilt lettering on red labels and raised bands. Gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. A very nice copy of the first edition of the first novel written by Charlotte Brontë. Although written before the author's breakout success with Jane Eyre, this novel was originally rejected by publishers at the time, and was not published until two years after her untimely death in 1855. Both volumes are complete with the original period publisher's advertisements on numbered pages at the rear. Noted printing errors in this true first issue copy are the transposing of the last letters on the first two lines of p.21 in volume 1, the periods missing at the end of the headlines of pages 58 and 221 of volume 2, and the "p" at the beginning of the third line of p. 99 (vol.2) missing. Bindings with some light rubbing to extremities, and some minor scratching, abrasions and/or stains to the covers. Minor chipping to the head of the spine of the second volume. Book blocks tight. Interior with a very few minor instances of smudges or tiny water stains. Light pencil notes on the initial blank of the first volume. Bindings in very good-, interior in near fine condition overall.

Description: FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. Half titles, final ad. leaf vol. I, 16pp cata. vol. II. 2 vols in 1 in orig. publisher's remainder binding; dark green morocco-grained cloth, borders in blind, spine with decorated gilt bands at head & tail, lettered in gilt: THE / PROFESSOR / BY / CURRER BELL. / LONDON / SMITH, ELDER & CO. Some expertly executed minor repairs, but overall a v.g. well-preserved copy in a scarce format. Smith (p.162) mentions that 719 copies were bound up thus 'on or before 30 June 1859'. The grain on this copy is vertical (rather than diagonal or horizontal as described by Smith), and it has pale yellow endpapers. The Professor was Charlotte's first completed novel but last published, posthumously.

It was in Meyler's bookshop that Shelley and Mary Godwin lodged during their stay in Bath in 1816/17.Small ownership signature on front free endpaper of first volume. A bit of foxing here and there. Covers faded, especially at the spines. A very good, tight set.
