White, William S. [William Smith White], 1905-1994. [Lyndon B. Johnson, 1908-1973; Paul G. Rogers, 1921-2008.]. THE PROFESSIONAL; LYNDON B. JOHNSON.. Boston - Cambridge, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company - The Riverside Press, 1964., 1964.

Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Description: Fourth printing (as stated upon copyright page) WITH PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON INSCRIPTION. [8], 273 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.5cm. Lacks dust jacket. Reddish-orange cloth; black and gilt lettering to spine with gilt lettering to front board; light bumping to spine head and at front board's bottom fore-edge corner. Faint impression of reversed type also on half-title as if some sheet with slightly transferable ink had been laid-down atop; also on half-title page is three-line ink inscription "To Paul Rogers - | with best wishes, | Lyndon B Johnson" which is quite likely the handwriting of LBJ's aide Bruce Thomas as "with best wishes" is the common generic greeting for most known secretarial copies of this book; the Johnson signature is all conjoined in one continuous ink flow and is without a period after the middle initial; impression of the handwriting can be felt on the half-title verso. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding retains some crispness. Else a near fine copy. Congressman Paul G. Rogers (1921-2008) graduated from the University of Florida in 1942 and, after World War II service, earned a law degree at the University of Florida in 1948. Entering private practice in Palm Beach, Florida and serving on the board of directors for Merck & Co. and Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York, Democrat Paul Rogers won a special election to fill the House seat held by his late father, U.S. Representative Dwight L. Rogers (1886-1954), a five term Congressman serving Florida's 6th district from January 1945 until his passing in December 1954. Paul Rogers went on to be elected to a total of twelve terms to the U.S. House of Representatives serving from January 1955 to January 1979. Rogers specialized in environmental and health-care legislation earning the moniker "Mr. Health" and was commemorated as the namesake of the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach and for the National Institutes of Health's main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The book was acquired directly from the Paul and Rebecca Rogers estate.

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover. No DJ. Orange cloth with gold lettering. 273 pages. Clean and in very good condition. Stated fourth printing. Signed on the half title page by the President or by one of his secretaries, "with best wishes, Lyndon B. Johnson." There are a dozen or so signed copies of this title online at the time of this writing; the signature here does not match any of the others exactly enough to suggest Autopen - but as with all LBJ signatures, one always has to keep in mind that it was not unusual for secretaries to sign for him. Please email with questions or to request photos.
