Alec Waugh (Alexander Raban Waugh, 1898-1981) published his first novel, The Loom of Youth (1917), when he was just out of school. "By the time it became apparent that The Loom of Youth was a best-seller," records his nephew Auberon Waugh in the ODNB, "Waugh was a prisoner of war near Mainz, having fought at Passchendaele with the Dorset regiment and been captured as a machine-gunner near Arras." The Prisoners of Mainz (Roussel's frontispiece illustration is entitled "The Doom of Youth") is a good-natured account of his wartime experiences; 2pp. publisher's advertisement at end for The Loom of Youth (ninth edition, twentieth thousand) - "press opinions" from Captain C.K. Scott-Moncrieff and others.

In oatmeal cloth with laid-on white, black & red title label to spine. In the original clay-coloured DJ (in protective wraps) with the frontis illustration reproduced to the top cover, some light chipping to the front fold and the top of the spine. Identical to the Britiah first edition this is a scarce work in any condition, let alone with the original jacket. Alec Waugh, the brother of Evelyn, was held as a POW in the First World War and served with distinction with Tito's forces in Yugoslavia (as a member of the embryonic SAS) in the Second. Illustrations by Captain R.T.Roussel (P.O.W. Mainz).
