Front endpapers have writing and a name label. Hole in the front free endpaper. Thoroughly foxed. Name written on title page. ; Volume One, out of 2, only. BAL 3836.

Description: 12mos. 252; 276 pages. First editions with the corrected slips pasted onto the copyright pages. Hardcovers bound in original brown half leather with brown marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt rules on the spines with black bands flat on the spine as well as gilt devices in the panels. The bindings are rubbed and bumped, but the bindings are strudy. Spines a bit dry, and spine ends are abraded or heavily rubbed. The fore edge of the board to Volume I has some pest damage affecting the bottom third of the front cover, right at the edge. The front pastedowns of each volume has a small early strip of paper pasted down with "Henry Lansing" printed on it. A couple of leaves in Volume I are slightly sprung, and pages 73 to 82 of Volume II are a bit sprung. Text is toned and has some foxing, but the text blocks are sound. A decent set in original contemporary bindings.

The bindings have been repaired with contemporary boards and 3/4 leather, and are now protected in mylar. Newer matching spine and labels. Newer end papers. Previous owner's name on the title pages. Interior pages are clean with the slightest of browning. A tight attractive set. The American first has become quite scarce. One of the five novels in Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales.

Description: First Edition, First Printing bound in contemporary half cream cloth with titles written in ink on spines. Both books are complete with the cancel slips affixed to copyright notices as called for by Spiller & Blackburn. The publisher's advertisements at the front of Volume I are present. The cloth bindings have some occasional soiling to the spines and interior. The inner paper hinges split. The pages are clean an early ink owner signatures on title pages. A very good copy housed in a custom slipcase with chemise.
