Darwin, Charles. THE POWER OF MOVEMENTS IN PLANTS, ASSISSTED BY FRANCIS DARWIN. John Murray, London, England, 1880.

Price: US$800.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 592 pp, 196 text woodcuts. Assisted by Francis Darwin. adverts (32pp, dated May 1878). BLACK AND WHITE ILLUSTRATIONS. Images and contents below. Freeman ref: F1325 Recently rebound in quarter green Morocco with calf labels hand-lettered in 24ct gold (the titling has been kept the same as on the original cloth spines: "The Movements of Plants"). Binding tight. Fresh green endpapers. No previous names. Generally very clean- a very good, tight copy. This title is, without doubt, the hardest of Darwin's scientific works to obtain in a Murray imprint. Only about 3000 were issued in the entire 19th Century and none were printed at all in the UK in the 20th Century, by any publisher, until facsimiles appeared in the 1960s. "This was an extension of the work on climbing plants to show that the same mechanisms hold good for flowering plants in general. It was another specialist book and seems to have sold fewer copies than any other, and was not reprinted in England after the year of Darwin's death until modern facsimilies appeared of the first thousand in 1966 and the second in 1969. "The first edition was published on November 6, 1880, and it is recorded that 1,500 copies were sold at Murray's autumn sale. It was in a standard binding and cost 15s. There are thirty-two pages of inserted advertisements dated May 1878; to have them more than two years earlier than the date of the book is unusual, but this is normal and they are present in Darwin's own copy, at Cambridge. In this issue there are two lines of errata on page x which are corrected in the second thousand of the same year. In this second thousand, the advertisements may be the same as those in the first, but are more often dated November 1880. In the third thousand of 1882, the last Murray printing, the preface is slightly altered. In all three, the spine title differs from the form on the title page, reading 'The movements of plants'."

DARWIN, Charles; edited by DARWIN, Francis. THE POWER OF MOVEMENTS IN PLANTS.. London: John Murray., 1880.

Price: US$1920.44 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue. Publisher's original green cloth boards, with borders in blind to the upper and lower boards, titles in gilt to the spine. Illustrated with 196 woodcuts throughout the text. Publisher's 32 page catalogue to the rear dated May 1878. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners, the cloth with a light mark to the top of the upper board. The contents, with a previous owner's name in ink to the front pastedown, spotting to the first and last pages and sporadically to the margins, are otherwise clean throughout. The front hinge is cracked but holding firm, the rear hinge starting at the bottom. An attractive, entirely unsophisticated example. Darwin began writing this book in the summer of 1877, and at 600 pages is his longest botanical book. It is an extension of his work on climbing plants, showing that the same mechanism operated for flowering plants in general. 'A tough piece of work,' he commented in his autobiography, '. in accordance with the principle of evolution it was impossible to account for climbing plants having been developed in so many widely different groups unless all kinds of plants possess some slight power of movement of an analogous kind. This I proved to be the case' (Autobiography, ed. F. Darwin, New York, 1958, p. 52). This first issue, containing two lines of errata on page x, was published on 6 November 1880 in an edition of 1500 copies. (Freeman 1325). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

DARWIN, Charles & Francis.. The Power of Movement in Plants. With Illustrations.. London: John Murray, 1880, 1880.

Price: US$3200.73 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue, of Darwin's penultimate book, continuing his experiments with climbing plants and prepared with the assistance of his son Francis. The first issue is distinguished by the presence of two lines of errata on p. x, which are corrected in the second issue of the same year. The collaborative authorship proclaimed on the title page reflects Darwin's interest in introducing his children into the world of science. Francis Darwin trained as a doctor but turned from medicine to botany, initially working as secretary and assistant to his father. In 1876, was for some months at the University of Würzburg, learning laboratory methods from Julius Sachs. "The book was an extension of Charles Darwin's work on climbing plants and it showed that the same mechanisms can be observed in plants in general. By extending the idea of irregular circumnutation the Darwins analysed the growth movement of plants in response to factors of the environment such as light, gravity, and wounds. In addition, they demonstrated that the mechanism of curvature in both roots and shoots was the result of differential growth rates. They could also confirm that the effect of the stimuli on the growth movement was indirect and that light and gravity act on some substance in the tip of the root and the shoot, which is transmitted to other parts of the plant. Francis Darwin later refined some of the experimental techniques and modified their theoretical conclusions" (ODNB). Freeman 1325. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers panelled in blind, brown coated endpapers. With 196 woodcuts within text. 32 pp. publisher's advertisements dated May 1878 at rear. Spine and top edge of front cover slightly darkened, ends and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, inner hinges cracked but holding firm, contents clean: a very good copy.
