On the central Minnie Mouse pop-up the tiips of the bird nest closest to the lower book edge ar a little bent as well as Minnie's legs. In some vertical page margins there are some very light smudges. A small brown spot at vertical edges and side margins on 5 pages at the end of the book, diminishing by the last of the pages. Interior is bright, clean, tight and very good+ to near fine. Three color POP-UPS adorn this wonderful copy. Of course Mickey is part of the story. All are bright and complete. The first and last are perfect. The middle POP-UP, by far the most intricate, is perfect but has two extra fold lines on Minnie's feet. Very small imperfection. There is a Waldorf-Astoria bookplate on the back side of the back free endpaper indicating that this book was presented to a lucky young lady on the occasion of her eighth birthday by the New York landmark. With the help of various animal friends, Mickey and Minnie Mouse save a newly hatched duckling from a hungry hawk. The story is illustrated throughout with black and white drawings, both full page and within text. Additionally, there are three beautiful full color double page pop-up illustrations of which the illustrations and the paper engineering have been attributed to C. Carey Cloud. Description: Glorious early Disney pop-up "presented by" Mickey Mouse in the original dust jacket, part of the pioneering Blue Ribbon movable book project that gave pop-ups their official name. In her study of movable books, Jacqueline Reid-Walsh says that "the term 'pop-up book' is a modern one of American coinage that emerged in the 1930s when Blue Ribbon Publishing worked with the Disney studio to loosely adapt popular fairy tales into a movable book format." (Ellen Rubin notes a ca. 1912 British "Pop-Up Book," not widely known but predating this; Blue Ribbon introduced the term into copyright.) For this ambitious paper engineering project, Disney chose two shorts from their animated SILLY SYMPHONIES, "Babes in the Woods" and "King Neptune." "Babes in the Woods," based on a Brothers Grimm work, shows the company's early experimentation with classic fairy tales before their pivotal first full-length feature film (also from Grimm): SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (1937). "King Neptune" was an original story conceived to lavishly show off the underwater fantasy setting in Technicolor, and now in 3D paper construction. A delicate book, it is difficult to find in nice condition, complete with the original dust jacket and all pop-ups intact. 9.5'' x 7.25''. Original color pictorial boards. In original color pictorial dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with full page and in-text color images and 4 glorious double-page pop-ups (illustrated front and back). 48 pages. Book with cracking to hinges between text block leaves, as common for how this book was produced; a bit of bumping and light flaking to spine ends. Jacket somewhat soiled, with moderate chipping to spine ends (affecting first word at spine head) and a few small closed tears (one repaired with tape on verso).

Description: Publisher's color pictorial boards, Full color pictorial endpapers. Small piece missing (1 5/8 x 7/16 inch) from rear endpaper. Original color pictorial dust jacket, very slightly worn at lower edge. A near fine copy. 48 pages, including four magnificent scenic full color pop-up plates and numerous tinted illustrations throughout the text. Babes in the Woods is a 1932 Silly Symphonies animated film. It is a re-working of the British folk tale Babes in the Wood, with some material incorporated from Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, and the addition of a village of friendly elves (a feature not traditionally present in either tale). Noticeably the Disney ending is happier than in traditional fairy tales, helping early on the establish the tone of these children's books. King Neptune is a 1932 cartoon by Walt Disney, the second in the Silly Symphonies series produced in Technicolor. While Flowers and Trees was originally intended as a black and white cartoon, King Neptune was meant to be in colors already from the start, and was able to take full advantage of this.

Description: Glazed pictorial boards printed in color. Pictorial endpapers in color. Four fabulous and detailed double-page pop-up scenes, plus full and partial page black & white illustrations throughout. Aside from two tiny stains at the edges of the upper board, and a bit of shelf wear along the bottom edge, this is a fine copy with fine pop-ups. The scarce dustwrapper is present; it has a couple of light stains, a short marginal tear, and some light rubbing at the edges else about fine. A sharp copy of an early Disney work.
