Joseph Conrad. A Set of Six. Doubleday, Page & Co, 1908.

Price: US$49.00 + shipping

Condition: Poor

Description: 1908, 2nd Edition, 3rd Printing Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1915. Green soft leather boards and binding with gilded title and author. Boards in very poor condition as they are worn across all edges and on the board itself. Binding is very worn, although one can still read the author and title. First American Edition of this collection of six short stories. The English edition had been published in 1908, and in the same year one of the stories, "The Duel," was published alone by McClure of New York (as "The Point of Honor"). A few months later McClure went under and was bought out by Doubleday -- but since Doubleday could not acquire the copyright to most of the other five tales (because they had already been published in England), he was in no hurry to publish this volume -- until the success of CHANCE in 1913 prompted him to do so (hence the seven-year delay of the American A SET OF SIX). All of this undoubtedly prompted a small printing, making this one of the scarcer American editions of Conrad. In his "author's note" Conrad expresses his satisfaction at having this tale restored "to its proper home and surroundings," rather than cutting down the American edition to "A Set of Five." (The volume is "rounded out" with the addition of "The Romantic Story of Joseph Conrad," much of it gleaned from Richard Curle's biography of the year before.)

Condition: Fine

Description: 1908. A Military Tale. Illustrations by Dan Sayre Groesbeck. New York:The first edition, 1st state with the Mc Clure on the spine. All the plates by the artist are present and are in fine condition. The McClure Company, 1908. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in white. First Separate (and First American) Edition. Earlier in 1908 this tale was published in England (as "The Duel") with five others in A SET OF SIX; it was McClure's publication of this tale that caused the delay in the publication of the American edition of A SET OF SIX until 1915. (Also, no publisher was in a hurry to do so: in 1908 Conrad's career was at its nadir, but his star rose again after CHANCE hit it big in 1914.)~This copy is in the first and usual binding, with "McClure" at the foot of the spine. (THE POINT OF HONOR was published in September 1908; by November, the publisher McClure was forced to sell his assets to Doubleday Page, and subsequently-bound copies bear the new publisher's name at the foot of the spine.) This is a very good plus bright copy, rare thus. Rerferences: Cagle A13c
