Henry Kirke White (1785-1806) was born in Nottingham the son of a butcher. He is not widely known as a poet, perhaps because he died at the age of 21, and Robert Southey, his friend and later Poet Laureate, is more widely known. This book, first published in 1808, serves as a autobiography in letters and verse.

This work was one of Southey's more successful ones, going through three editions very quickly, and it attracted positive reviews. The Annti-Jacobin Review commented that "We have accompanied Mr. Southey through his pilgrimage with unmixed pleasure, with satisfaction unalloyed"; while Jospeh Conder was glad to see that "heroical descriptions of the battle itself" were avoided. The critic for The Monthly Review seemed very pleased with himself for being able to discern the poem's merits: "we have analyzed and synthesized the properties and peculiarities of Mr. Southey's muse on several occasions, we shall only now have the more pleasing task to perform, of justifying our preceding praise by various selections from this most interesting little volume."
