Overall this book with preface dated 1857 is in very good to fine condition.

Rebound with original ornately impressed gilt decorated (but dulled/lightly rubbed) front board & spine & plain impressed decorated rear set onto new binding with darkened beige cloth showing to hinges & ends of spine which have losses to original binding. Heavy wear to corners or new binding with frays exposing card of underlayer, wear through to card at bottom edges in places. Ink presentation inscription dated 1856 to free end-paper. Gilt to all page-edges. Outstanding b/w illustrations within text. Slight blotching to a good percentage of pages, but text is otherwise nice & clean. Binding a little strained in places. Well used.
