(Poetry) LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth. The Poets and Poetry of Europe (FIRST EDITION). Carey & Hart, Philadelphia, 1845.

Price: US$825.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 6 X 9 3/8 Inches. 779 PP. First printing with the imprint of "Metcalf And Company" on the copyright page. Original deluxe three-quarter black morocco, raised hubs and gilt edges. Crown of spine bumped and some light wear to covers and edges, but an excellent copy of this scarce comprehensive anthology of several centuries of Euopean verse. Includes Longfellow's original translations of many authors. This particular copy bears the bookplate of William Winter (nicknamed "Weeping Willie" for his tear-jerking verse), a minor poet who later became a notable theatre critic. Winter's first book was dedicated to Longfellow and published in 1855. Although Winter knew Longfellow personally, he was a noted bibliophile and we assume this book was simply purchased by him (and not given to him). Minor foxing and toning and light stains to title-page.
