Gervase Markham (c.1568-1637) descended from a Nottinghamshire gentry family, was a prolific writer and tenant farmer, whose non-literary works included military training, domestic economy, veterinary medicine and horsemanship in addition to husbandry. The Pleasures of Princes first appeared as part of The English Husbandman of 1614 (new edition, 1635). Colonel Robert Venables (c.1613-87), from a Puritan Cheshire gentry family, fought for Parliament in the Civil War in Cheshire and later in Ireland, 1649-54. As joint commander of the 'Western Design' expedition against Spanish possessions in the West Indies, he captured Jamaica in 1665. After the Restoration he retired to his Cheshire estate and published the first edition of The Experienced Angler, with a preface by his friend, Izaak Walton, in 1662.
