POUND, Ezra.. The Pisan Cantos.. New York: New Directions, 1948, 1948.

Price: US$487.33 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing of one of the most significant sections of Pound's Cantos, written while the poet was incarcerated in an American prison camp near Pisa following the Second World War for his treasonous broadcasts on Rome Radio. It was awarded the first Bollingen Prize in 1948. A "moving elegy for the past and a painful self-examination" (ANB), The Pisan Cantos are considered "the most consistently lyrical cantos and the most personal, even confessional, part of Pound's epic. They are written in a variety of languages, English predominates, but Latin, Greek, Italian, German, French, and Chinese abound - 'it can't all be one language', Pound once explained. The Pisan Cantos are founded at the intersection of the destruction of civilisation, Pound's personal trauma, and the 'enormous tragedy of the dram on the peasant's bent shoulders'" (Marsh, p. 227). Alec Marsh, "Ezra Pound", in Cambridge Companion to American Poets, 2015. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Ownership inscription dated 15 September 1952 and embossed stamp to front free endpaper of Homer Clifford Neely Jr. (1930-2017), American Navy officer and veteran of the Korean War. Spine ends and corners a little bumped and rubbed, foxing to margins of endpapers; peripheral toning to jacket, front panel remaining quite bright, a few small chips and nicks to extremities, discreet tape repair to verso, short tear to front joint: a very good copy indeed in like jacket.
