Description: Tan cloth. Front board has a pictorial pastedown; the Patchwork Girl and Munchkin boy are sitting beneath the work, "Patchwork." B & W illustrations on the endpapers and in the text. 341 pages. Part of the front joint is darkened. The back board has thinned cloth on about 2/3's of the front edge, and three water stains that have dulled the cloth's sheen, up to a linear 1 3/4 in. The text block ends have darkened, have shelfwear soiling, a water stain, and numerous pinpoint and pinhead size stains. The water stain only runs onto the top corner of reverse side of the front FEP and the facing page. Pages are clean and tightbound. DJ: front flap has $2.00 stamped above and beside the original price, which is stamped over; the front flap has a list of 34 titles, of which this title is # 6; numerous chips and a few closed tears along the top and bottom edges and on the flaps' folds; spine panel is faded and is mottled with water stains; front panel has water stains and scratches; back panel has crease lines and light foxing. Description: Orig. published in 1913, this is a later (post-1935) Reilly & Lee reprint, with the NO color plates, but lavishly illustrated in pen-and-ink by John R. Neill throughout the book's 341 pages, with decorative endpapers by same; summaries of some other Oz books in rear. This edition has dark blue cloth over boards, with a brilliantly colored paper pastedown to front cover & black lettering & design to spine (fancy publisher script, not plain). Condition is VG- (minus): generally very clean, with the occasional smudge. Text block strong, but rear hinge is cracked. Pages creamy white with light tanning, heavier around edges. Ownership box is blank, all pages unmarked. Bumped corners, rubbing to extremities, heaviest at lower spine & a very heavily rubbed spot along lower fore edge side of rear board. The fFront pastedown is brilliant & bright, NO fading or edgewear! Alas, the original DJ is long gone, but this remains a handsome copy! The spine is shifted and the cover has moderate heavy soil staining. Small fray at bottom spine corner (tiny one to top spine corner). pages mostly clean with some scattered mild soil and there is a mild water page ripple at top with a top edge water mark to the pages. Last rear illustration is colored, and the rear endpaper has some coloring at the bottom edge (mostly).Just over 9 x 6-1/2 with 340 pages. Description: First Printing, First State Very good in light green cloth covered boards with dark green text on the spine and the outline of Woozy character embellished in red on the spine. The front board is decorated in dark green and red with red and green text spelling out the title and author's name. An octavo of 9 by 6 3/4 inches with printed, color end sheets conforming to Binding A as defined in Paul Bienvenue's The Book Collector's Guide to L. Frank Baum p.52. The cloth and the head and heel of the spine is a bit rubbed and the backstrip is tanned. Both boards are slightly soiled. There is a 1/2 inch long area at the fore edge of the front board which has been chewed exposing the underlying board. Both hinges are holding, but starting. The ownership page has a dated (1916) gift inscription. This copy is a first state of the first edition as evidenced by the large red "C" in chapter on page 35 overlying the text on the page and the first page of ads on page [343] begins: "You will be glad to know.". Without its issued dust jacket. 341 pages followed by a blank verso and six pages of ads from the publisher describing early Oz titles. Illustrated throughout from black and white engravings by John R. Neill many of which are in color. A very attractive and clean copy of this first state of the first edition. A couple of light bumps to the board edges, the spine a little rubbed at the tips and very lightly worn at the ends, publisher's lettering at the spine foot rubbed and the boards with very faint spotting noticeable at an angle, really unobtrusive and not noticeable.
